First bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada and first Eastern Catholic bishop with full jurisdiction ever appointed in the New World Nykyta Budka was born June 7, 1877, in Dobromirka, Austria Hungary (now modern Ukraine). His early education was in his village and county, and later the Ternopil gymnasium. He then was a tutor, served 1 year in the military, and studied law at the University of Lviv and theology at Lviv Theological Seminary. He entered the Collegium Canisianum in Innsbruck, Austria. Ordained a priest by Metropolitan Andriy Sheptytsky in Lviv in 1905, in 1907 he was named prefect of the Lviv seminary, and in 1910 was charged by Metropolitan Andriy to care for Ukrainian immigrants in various countries. Appointed bishop for Ukrainian Catholics in Canada and titular bishop of Patara by Pope Pius XI in 1912, Bishop Budka arrived in Winnipeg in December 1912, just before the beginning of the first World War. After 15 years in Canada, he returned to his native Galicia in what is now Ukraine. During the Soviet occupation of Ukraine following World War II, Bishop Budka was imprisoned and deported to Kazakhstan, where he died a martyr’s death. Nykyta Budka was beatified by St John Paul II during the Pope’s visit to Lviv, Ukraine in 2001. In 2012, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops chose to honor Blessed Nykyta Budka, along with another Bishop Martyr, Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky, by making them the objects of veneration for Catholics of all Rites in Canada. After a life of totally dedicated service, Bishop Budka gave up everything, including his own life, rather than break with the unity of the Catholic Church, the Universal Church, that was instituted by Christ, and the unity with Blessed Peter the Apostle and his successors. .
