Cameron

COMING EVENTS

Smith, Petero Civoniceva, Kurt Gidley and Nathan Hindmarsh joined us for about an

Wednesday February 9

hour and spoke to the whole school in our new multi-purpose centre. They answered

Whole School Assembly

the children’s questions and had the chance to give away some NRL merchandise, some of which we will look to use for our Fete later in the year, and joined us for some group photos (These are attached throughout this newsletter). They also took the time to stress to the children the importance of healthy eating habits and regular exercise. The morning was an exciting one for the children (and many staff – Iris Burnell managed to snare a photo with Petero) and we are indebted to our Assistant Principal, Tony Barron, for his organisation of the day. Tony, through his Queensland Primary School Rugby League contacts, was able to snare this great opportunity at the end of last year. He has spent a great deal of time liaising with the various levels of the league structure and our congratulations are offered to him for his efforts. It was a fun morning.

Friday February 11

8 & 9 yr old ‘A” division swim trials

Monday February 14

7pm—P & F Meeting

Wednesday February 16

Yr 7—G.C Leadership Liturgy
St Vincent’s
Parent Information Evening

Thursday February 17

District Swimming

Parent Information Meetings - Wednesday, 16 February

We have finalised the times for our annual Information meetings for our parents which are being held on the above date. The meetings will be general in their format and Friday March 4

G.C.C.P.S. Swim Carnival

therefore I would ask parents to refrain from asking child-specific questions as our teachers may not be adequately able to answer them in a public forum. The meetings will run through daily routines, cover major curriculum areas and discuss matters such as parental support, homework and the like. They will run on to each other for some families or may mean breaks of a half an hour between meetings, so to help out we will have tea, coffee and biscuits available to help pass the time. These will be served out of our Tuckshop area. Thank you for your anticipated support of our teachers and these meetings. All meetings will be held in your child’s respective classroom.

Prep – Year 1 5.00pm Year 4/5 6.30pm
Year 2/3 5.45pm Year 6/7 7.15pm

Parents’ and Friends’ Meeting – Monday, 14 February – 7.00pm

I would just like to remind parents that our first P. & F. meeting for the year is being held next Monday evening in our school staff room. Issues for the night include future directions for the school, Year 7 move to High School, combined School / College Fete as well as financial reports and meeting dates for the year. I look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible.

Staff News

MASS TIMES

Children Mass

Last week was the last week of teaching for a while for Meagan Curry who started a period of Long Service Leave from Friday. We wish Meagan a restful and refreshing time away from the daily happenings of our school and we look forward to her re-joining us in August. In Meagan’s place we welcome Melissa Redman as our Cultural Languages and Literacy teacher. Melissa is well known to many of our children as she has done a number of contracts here over the last few years.

(Doyle Centre - children read at Mass) 5.30pm 1st Sunday of each month

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

(Doyle Centre - children are withdrawn for brief lesson)
10.00am 2nd & 4th Sundays; 5.30pm 3rd Sunday 8.30am each Sunday at St Benedict’s,
Mudgeeraba

Parish Mass Times

Sat—5.00pm Miami; 6.00pm at Palm Beach; 6.15pm at Burleigh Heads; Sun-7.00am at Palm Beach &
Burleigh;
8.30am at Mudgeeraba & Miami; 10.00am at Doyle Centre; 5.30pm at Doyle Centre

Swimming Carnival Success

On Monday we held our Swimming Carnival for our 10 to 13 year old children at Pizzey Park at Miami. The weather turned a bit cooler for us after the weekend’s hammering conditions and the children performed tremendously. There was plenty of good sportsmanship on display as well as some eagerly contested events. Congratulations to the children for their participation and enthusiasm and thanks also to our parents and friends who turned up to cheer the children on. Our thanks are extended to our Senior and Junior P.E. teachers, Paul Hill and Andrea Bedward, for their organisation prior to the carnival and their work on the day. Thanks also to our staff who helped in many ways on the day. Well done also to the Year 7 children who performed creditably in the teacher / student relay at the day’s end.

Thanks for reading.

Greg Casey Pickup and Drop Off of Children

There are 2 main areas within the school where children can be picked up or dropped off each day. These are Sunlight Drive and the main car park/bus area off Reedy Creek Road.

The road that accesses the Primary and College Administrations is not to be used to pick up or drop off children. We ask that parents leave this area clear at all times for the safety of our children. Children and classes use the crossing at many times throughout the day to access the office, the oval and the Doyle Centre. Parking or driving on this road before, during or after school, could endanger the lives of our children.

Please also be aware that NO parents should be parked in the drive-through area where the buses pick up children

Tuesday Lunch

This semester the College will be using our ovals for their Interschool Sport Program each Tuesday.

Prep students and their families on the first day at Marymount.

To help the College in this area, we will be having an early lunch each Tuesday. Our lunch time will now run from 12:20 – 12:50pm each Tuesday until Semester 2

NRL All Stars v Indigenous Game

On Saturday February 12 the second ever NRL All Stars v Indigenous Game will be held at Skilled Park Stadium.

Yesterday we were visited by 4 of the NRL All Star players: Cameron Smith; Petero Civoniceva; Kurt Gidley and Nathan Hindmarsh. The players spoke with the children about healthy eating, keeping fit, and about their NRL careers. The children asked some great questions of the players and had the opportunity for some photos.

STUDENT BANKING 2011

Media from Brisbane Catholic Education Marketing department organised some photos and will hopefully be placing these and a story on the BCE website, in the Catholic Leader, and with the Courier Mail.
It is great to see so many students saving and collecting their Dollarmite tokens. Remember Tuesday is school banking day and students should bring their weekly deposits into their class for their teacher to collect. Every deposit made at school no matter how big or small receives a cool Dollarmite token. There are great new reward items worth 10 tokens which will be announced next week! If you have tokens from last year you can continue to collect them for the backpack which requires 30 tokens to redeem; this will be available until the end of Term 2, 2011. If you would like to open a Youthsaver account and participate in school banking there are new account packs available from the bookshop; please complete them at home and return to school.
I spoke with the players after the assembly and they were full of praise for the way the children participated in the assembly and were so full of enthusiasm.

Have a great week

Tony Barron

Flute for sale – near new, used last

year only for lessons at school. To what extent do we truly acknowledge each child (or adult) for their unique worth? Do we take the time to take each person seriously for they are? Do we truly value the voice of each person with whom we interact? Are we good, active listeners? Whilst we do need to teach children about certain ways to conform in society, such as following rules and showing due respect for others, we also need to be careful not to stifle the creativity and individuality of the developing person. This is a delicate balance but one worth investing time and energy. Many of our classes have “Circle Time” scheduled into their daily programs. This strategy allows each and every child to have a voice and to be acknowledged for their voice on a daily basis. Perhaps you could spend a few moments discussing “Circle Time” with your children to hopefully appreciate its impact.
Hugh Mackay, a leading Australian social researcher, has written and presented some well acclaimed thoughts about changes and their impact on Australian society. In his book, “What Makes Us Tick” (Hachette, Australia; 2010) he analyses some human desires and how these affect our behaviours.

He argues that our behaviours express our desires to be taken seriously and if we are not taken seriously we tend to resort to particular measures so that we become heard and noticed, and some of these measures are very unhealthy. “Taken seriously” in this sense does not mean being taken as a “serious” type person, but as a unique and valued individual. Mackay lists human desires as (p. 3) as: • the desire for the respect of others • the desire to be noticed
Enjoy the rest of the week

Annette O’Shea

• the desire to be appreciated • the desire to matter • the desire to be understood • the desire to be valued as a person • the desire to be accepted

Ozanam Villa Visits

Last Wednesday saw the first our visits of students to Ozanam Villa at Burleigh for 2011. Ozanam Villa is an aged care facility in our local area that caters for residents with a wide range of needs. Most of our interaction is with low-care residents and occasionally with day –respite care clients. Students from Years 1, 2, 6 and 7 visit residents at the Villa throughout the year and spend time with them in prayer and conversation. Older students celebrate Mass with them while the younger ones read, chat and share stories of life. This most worthwhile activity is beneficial for both students and residents who share life experiences and come to appreciate a view that is different from their own.
• the desire to be remembered. He writes that if we do not perceive our voices are heard in a legitimate and authentic way, our reactions may range from sadness; envy of others receiving recognition, or resentment. Over time these can manifest in some serious dysfunctional type behaviours such as drug abuse and life-altering situations such as broken relationships.

He cites examples in everyday life situations to demonstrate his point. He describes the situation such as when people are unsuccessful in job applications and then in dealing with the silence that often follows where the candidate reports, “It’s as if I didn’t exist.” The lack of acknowledgement of the application (their voice) is more painful in some ways that the actual unsuccessful outcome.

Last week my class went to Ozanam Villa. Firstly we sang ‘I Sing To Mary’ and ‘God’s Love Is’. Secondly we showed them our acrostic poems. Thirdly we read some books to them. Finally we had some chips and a drink of cordial. Then we went back to school. We had a great time.

By Josephine, Keely and Stephanie in 2LC
The same is reported of those left in waiting rooms for appointments. Whist the irritation of a waste of time is evident, Mackay argues that the real problem is the unspoken message, “You’re not as important as we are.” (p.4)

Mackay then parallels these scenarios to the human dislike of being typified as the same as others; of being seen to be “typical”. Interestingly, he writes that we are quite able to handle criticism of personal shortcomings or failures, but we react against criticism seen in racism or sexism. He argues that this is because such labels as racism or sexism, see us lumped into a particular category, and therefore our uniqueness is not acknowledged. He writes (p. 5):

Raffle for flood victims

You will recall that Greg indicated in last week’s newsletter that Marymount Primary is twinned with Christ The King School at Graceville to offer assistance following the recent floods. About one-third of the school families there had suffered heavy losses in the floods. We are in the fortunate position of having some NRL ‘goodies’ left after yesterday’s visit and offer these as a way of raising money that will be given directly to this community.

We can handle criticism of our personal behaviour, for which we know we’re responsible, more easily than we can handle an attack based on assumptions about us because we happen to be Baby Boomers, Muslims, students, unmarried mothers, Lawyers, asylum-seekers, Presbyterians or homosexuals.”

Raffle to assist families at Christ The King Graceville.

$1.00 per ticket on sale at the tuckshop before school and at both breaks and at some of this weekend’s parish masses. Drawn at the school disco 23 March.
Three prizes each of an autographed football and laminated poster.
It seems we not only want to be accepted as part of a community, but we want to be valued as a unique individual as well.

Bernadette Christensen

We are starting to get back into the swing of things in the tuckshop. We still have some children ordering lunch from the 2010 menu. Please ensure you have the new 2011 ORANGE menu. Copies are available at the tuckshop.

Year 5-7 Swimming Carnival

Congratulation to all Marymount children who participated in the Years 5 – 7 swimming carnival on Monday. It was wonderful to see great sportsmanship and house spirit throughout the day. There was also plenty of tough competition in the pool with some individuals winning all four events for their age group.
New to the tuckshop menu is the SALAD SHAKER CUP...healthy, tasty and great to eat! Please encourage your child to try one. I am very pleased to report orders for fresh cut sandwiches, salads and fruit are on the up. Sushi is once again proving to be very popular and is
A very big thank you to all staff who helped make the carnival possible. This event is for ‘A’ Division swimmers only with whole year level carnivals to be held later on in the year in Term 4.
Tuesday saw the tuckshop ladies pop on a little extra lip gloss for the arrival of our visitors from the NRL ALL STARS!! It was great to meet some of the players and even better to hear the comments about our menu being so healthy and great for the children. Thanks to the Sexton Family for providing the tuckshop with fantastic decorations to welcome our special guests Nathan Hindmarsh; Petero Civoniceva; Kirt Gidley and Cameron Smith. New to the school tuckshop, mum Lon, was most impressed and asked who will be guest starring next time she is in the tuckshop! Thanks to Lisa Hatton for filling in at the last minute, I know how difficult it was for you.

District Swimming Carnival

The District Swimming Carnival will be held on Thursday 17 February at Somerset College.
