PETER ZANZOTTERA | P: 09 2697967 | E: [email protected] | NORTHLAND | KARAKA COMPLEX | 24/01/2010 After a week of heavy rain in Manurewa, the one day match had to be switched to Karaka Sports Complex where an artificial strip was used. | Batting first, three of the CMCA top order got starts, with Shane Gadsdon (41), Ashley Abraham (31) and Ashwyn Herwels (29) all failing to convert their scores into big runs. CMCA finished on 187/10 which was never going to be enough to challenge the strong Northland side. Northern Districts Under 17 batsman Henry Gibson made light work of the chase, hitting 44* as Northland won by 5 wickets. Captain Scott Guthrie was the pick of the CMCA bowlers, taking 2/24. NORTHLAND | MOUNTFORT PARK | 06&07/02/2010 CMCA used the two day game against Northland to blood even more youngsters into the side, with Karaka’s Matthew Cole (above) making his | debut aged just 16. Northland batted first and made 295 before being all out. Scott Guthrie took 4/73 to continue his fine season with the ball in Rep Cricket. The Northland XI featured former Black Cap Hamish Marshall who made 58. Fellow first class batsman Brad Wilson hit 94. CMCA were just 18 runs short of pulling off a great run chase with Northern Districts U19 captain Jono Hickey (right) hitting 110. Jono was well supported by Ashwyn Herwels (62) and Ashley Abraham (39*) but CMCA were finally all out for 277. | | CHAMPIONS FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1998 Karaka has won the W H Taylor Shield after defeating Waiuku by an innings and 31 runs in the final round of games. | Rightfully, it was Todd McDonald who picked up the last wicket that scratched a twelve-year itch for the club and gave them a year’s ownership of the 84 year old W H Taylor Shield. It’s the third time the club has had its name on the shield, the last time was 1997/8 and grants a birthday wish in the clubs 25th anniversary year. KARAKA BOYS LEAD THE WAY IN CLUB PLAYER POINTS Two of Karaka’s Championship winners are in the top three of the Club Player Points competition. Todd McDonald and Simon Beare (left) are rewarded for great form with bat and ball. McDonald has taken 35 wickets in all competitions which includes four 5 wicket bags. Added to the 437 runs (including 121* against Waiuku) he has scored he is comfortably clear at the top. Beare is the leading run | scorer in Premier Cricket with 516 which includes back-to-back centuries in February. Sandwiched between the two Karaka men is Pukekohe-Metro all rounder Mitchell Sweetman. Sweetman has also taken 35 wickets and the left arm pace man took 10 wickets in a match twice in the two day competition.
