#becauseofCLD October 2019 Community Learning and Development in Dundee Learner Journey - Fansa Fansa came to Scotland from Syria in May 2017 with her three adult children. Fansa had no formal education in Syria and wasn’t literate in either Arabic or, her native ESOL Literacies Group (Fansa, centre) language Kurdish. When Fansa first started attending English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes with Dundee City Council in October 2017 she would sit with her head in her hands in classes and say she didn’t understand. While she always attended, she seemed overwhelmed by the task of learning a new language in a new country. At the beginning of 2018 Fansa joined a small group to focus on her literacies needs, focusing on phonics, reading and writing using a multi-sensory approach. At that point, Fansa started to engage with learning and her motivation increased dramatically. She has formed a close bond with her classmates from Morocco and Spain, which helped to reduce her social isolation. Fansa currently attends general ESOL classes, her ESOL literacies group and the conversation class. She gets involved in every other opportunity offered to her and she is an extremely motivated and hard-working learner. She can now read and write simple sentences - with great pride and joy! She participates actively in all her groups: striving to do her utmost best in all areas of her learning and encourages other students to engage in class. Fansa is an inspiration to her classmates, the volunteers and the Adult Learning Team. All activities are free unless @IYNNorthEast stated otherwise. @IYNStrathmartine All venues are accessible wherever @IYNEastEnd possible. If you @IYNLochee @IYNColdside have accessibility @IYNTheFerry needs please contact @IYNMaryfield the group before @IYNWestEnd attending to discuss your requirements. 11 #becauseofCLD What do you think needs to happen for Dundee to be a Recovery Friendly City? Recovery Friendly Dundee aims to support everyone in their local community by raising awareness of the wider issues and stigma faced by people in recovery. We do this by bringing people together to share experiences, ideas and come up with community-led solutions. Substance use is the main focus of Recovery Friendly Dundee but it is important to recognise the strong links with mental health, inequality and other factors affecting an individual’s health. Send your ideas via this survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RecoveryFriendlyDundee We are also inviting individuals and groups to get creative by answering the above question using art, music, drama, dance, poetry or any other way you can think of. If you are interested, contact Robin Falconer on 01382 435854 or email [email protected] Coldside Community Groups Communities Officers support a wide range of community groups across the city. Detailed below are some current opportunities in the Coldside ward. To contact your local Communities Officer to find out how you can get involved across the city call 435808 or email [email protected] Coldside Community Forum Coldside Community Forum meets regularly to discuss issues affecting local communities in the Coldside Ward which includes Hilltown, Fairmuir, The Glens, The Law, Dudhope and Coldside. Currently discussions and consultations are around residential parking and the Hilltown district shopping area which will be ongoing. If you are interested in attending the meetings you can find out more by contacting Elaine Pratt on 433444 or contact @Coldside-Community-Forum on Facebook. 2 Friends of Dundee Law Friends of Dundee Law have recently formed and are becoming very active in the community with organising wildlife events, volunteer days and fun days throughout the year. There have been butterfly spotting events, bee information events, Easter egg hunts and a summer fun day to name but a few. The group would love some new members to help with the organisation and more people to help with these opportunities. If you would like to keep updated or get involved you can follow @friendsofdundeelaw on Facebook Coldside Events Group This group meets regularly to plan local big events such as the Coldside Fun Day in Hilltown Park and the Hilltown Christmas Light Switch On at Yorkes Butchers. The group is made of local people with a dedication to bringing their neighbours together to celebrate and enjoy their local community without the cost barriers that many of these events usually have. This means that everyone can enjoy them together. If you are interested in joining this group, supporting local events or would just like to volunteer some time on the day of events, get in touch with Jennifer Livingstone on 01382 433580 or follow www.facebook.com/IYNColdside to keep updated. Housing Matters We continue to need your help completing Annual Gas Safety Checks on time across the City. This is essential work. Please allow access to our engineers when we contact you so we can make sure we all live in a safe and protected environment.
