As per SRS 2001-03, abortion-related deaths account for nearly eight per cent of all maternal deaths in India, which translates to about 3,520 deaths annually. Numerous barriers limit access to safe abortion services including shortage of trained providers; lack of infrastructure at the facilities; and lack of information about legality and availability of services among women and the community. Medical Methods of Abortion is one of the safe technologies for abortion care which offers an opportunity to increase access to abortion care services especially in early pregnancy.
