LINES Ballet’s professional company performs in San Francisco and across the globe the works of Alonzo King, as well as inspiring with community engagement and arts education activities. The mission of Alonzo King LINES Ballet is to nurture dynamic artistry and the development of authentic, creative expression in dance, through collaboration, performance, and education. The Ballet Master is an integral member of the LINES Ballet Company. The position supports the learning, development and progress of the dancers, include teaching, prepearring and rehearing the dancers for performances and touring engagements, teaching company class and masterclasses, and coordinating with the Company staff regarding touring, performances, rehearsals, classes, and special events, among other duties. You will serve as an example of leadership and professionalism while at home and on tour, representing the company at engagement events. This position requires a strong ballet technique and experience, a proven track record in rehearsing and developing professional dancers at all levels to the highest standards, and the ability to be an ambassador for Alonzo King LINES Ballet’s mission across the globe. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: A. Supervision ● Supervise the dancers work, attendance, motivation and well-being ● Maintain overall artistic quality of performances while on tour and in San Francisco ● Effectively communicate original design aesthetic of the production with Production Director, Lighting Supervisor and local crew B. Learning and Development ● Along with Artistic Director, encourage the development of dancers and their skills, assessing their achievements and areas of weaknesses ● Ensure the dancers have thorough knowledge of the Company's current repertoire C. Performance & Preparation ● Teach, rehearse and prepare dancers for all productions and performances ● Teach Company class for dancers on tour, during YBCA seasons and at offsite public performances ● Facilitates the video recording of works in progress ● Notates the timing, music, casts, and counts of ballets in company repertoire ● Teach Masterclasses, Community Classes or other engagement events while on tour ● Takes notes during all performances and Lecture/Demonstrations to ensure the accurate execution of choreography, timing and spacing, as well as disseminates the notes to the dancers, production and wardrobe D. Management and Administration ● Assists in the selection of repertoire and artists to contribute to the individual and collective development of the Company ● Create and distribute weekly/daily rehearsal schedule and dancer event & activity calendar for Company ● Coordinates with the Company staff regarding casting and scheduling for touring, performances, rehearsals, classes, and special events ● Manages and coordinates ordering of dancer’s shoes ● Create and manage recruitment for new dancers, including scheduling and overseeing of auditions ● Attend tours, performing regular duties and representing Artistic Director during rehearsals and performances, when the Artistic Director is not present QUALIFICATIONS: A. Knowledge, Skills and Experience of Ballet ● Ability to see, hear, speak and physically demonstrate dance techniques, quickly learning and teaching repertoire of Alonzo King LINES Ballet productions ● A proven track record in teaching, rehearsing and developing professional dancers at all levels, to the highest standards ● Experience and understanding of the working practices of a major theatre B. Management ● Ability to promote effective teamwork, trust and harmonious working relationships at all levels ● Ability to motivate and coach people to perform and achieve superior results ● Ability to promote effective learning and development techniques to dancers ● Outstanding communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills ● Creative problem solver, open to change, flexible, and capable of adaptability ● Ability to manage priorities and support a busy workload ● Effective planning and time management skills ● Ability to work independently without close oversight ● Collaborative approach to problem-solving C. Other ● Passionate about LINES Ballet’s mission ● Flexibility to be available for scheduled classes, rehearsals and performances, including evenings and weekends as required - extensive travel during touring weeks ● Ability to reach, bend, stoop and demonstrate choreography ● Eligibility to work in the USA REQUIREMENTS: ● BA or an MA in Arts and dance studies or equivalent experience in professional ballet ● 7-10 years minimum of combined experience as ballet performer, teacher and/ or ballet master ● Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel), Google Drive, iTunes, Vimeo, etc. ● Familiarity with AV equipment (sound and video) and basic film editing ● Ability to travel frequently, international touring experience is a plus ● Speaking or the understanding of a second language (French, German, Spanish) is helpful, but not required BENEFITS AND SCHEDULE ● 40 weeks per year (including 15-20 weeks on tour) ● Monday – Friday; evenings and weekends on tour and during performance weeks ● Full-time, exempt employee ● Reports to Artistic Director and General Manager ● Competitive salary based on candidate’s experience and qualifications ● Benefits include a 100% Employer paid health plan, dental and vision coverage, pre-tax commuter benefits, access to a 403b retirement plan, and unlimited Dance Center classes TO APPLY Please send a cover letter and resume to ​[email protected]​ with “Ballet Master” in the email subject line.
