Krishnamachari Auditorium in the premises of the Academy, 306 T.T.K. Road, Madras - 600 014 from the 15th December 1995 to 1st January 1996. The Conference was inaugurated by Sri. G.V. Ramakrishna, member, Planning Commission, New Delhi. The inaugural function began with invocation by Dr. Manjula Sriram and Smt. Revathi Subramanian lecturers of the Teachers College of Music. Messages received on this occasion were read by Sri. T.T. Vasu. The President of the Academy, Sri. T.T. Vasu, welcomed the members of the Academy, members of the Advisory Committee and distinguished guests. Sri. Vasu, in his address said: Sri. G.V. Ramakrishna, Vidvan R.K. Srikantan, Members of the Academy’s Advisory Committee, Vidvans, Vidushis, distinguished invitees, ladies and gentlemen : With great pleasure I extend to all of you a hearty welcome to this inauguration of the 69th Annual Conference and conceits of the Academy. To Sri Ramakrishna, I extend a warm welcome on behalf of all of us, the Executive Committee and on my own behalf. We are grateful to him for so readily accepting to inaugurate this conference despite his heavy schedule of work at Delhi. Sri Ramakrishna is a distinguished civil servant and administrator with vast experience and distinction in many fields. After a brilliant academic career in Mysore and at Harvard, he joined the Indian 2 THE JOURNAL OF THE MADRAS MUSIC ACADEMY VOL.LXVII Administrative Service at the age of 22 and made a mark in whichever assignment he held. Ho has been serving the Academy fqr the past 18 . years as a; member of the Advisory Committee, Editor of our Journal and as Secretary from 1980. He is the recipient of thq Fellowship of the Ssaflgeet Natafc jAkademi for 1991. Smt. Sarada is the grand-daughter of the renowned Pandit S. Subramanya Sastri who was associated with this Academy from its inception and edated all its earlier publications. Smt. Sarada is a competent Sanskrit scholar and retired as the senior dance teacher of Kalakshetra, She was the collaborator of Rukmini Devi in all her dance-djama productions. Vidvan Anantaraman was trained in the violin by,his father Parur Sundaram Iyer and has been performing for over 60 years- with rare . distinction.He taught violin at the Government College of Music for over two decades and has travelled abroad. - p The year 1995 was an eventful year for the Academy. As usual, we conducted the ‘Spirit of Youth’ Music and Dance Festival for ten days from October 16th featuring 29 musicians and 10 dancers. As opportunities for instfuriientalists are hot adequate, We organ­ ised a ‘Vadya MadfturP festival in1 November, purely for instruhiehthf 4 THE JOURNAL OF THE MADRAS MUSIC ACADEMY VOL.LXVII music. We are grateful to Sundaram Fastners Ltd. and Sri Suresh Krishna for the generous support we received for these programmes. Sri. S. Natarajan, Secretary of the Academy, in whose death last year we suffered a grievous loss, was an ardent lover of music and had recorded, over the years, hundreds of concerts by leading musicians. Smt. Sarada Natarajan, his wife, has now come forward to donate to us this precious collection of about 163 spool tapes. We are grateful to her for this fine gesture and shall be preserving the tapes in our archives after scrutiny and indexing. In 1996 the Academy will be completing 70 years and will be holding its 70th Conference in December 1996.
