Summer Term 2018 Cornwall Music Education Hub Update Welcome to the Summer 2018 Newsletter! The Spring term was a busy time for us at the Cornwall Music Education Hub with our Ten Pieces Primary Proms at the Hall for Cornwall and our annual Songfest concerts. Over 1000 students from over 65 schools across Corn- wall sang as part of massed choir at 7 different venues from Helston to Saltash. We hope you enjoy the photos and we look forward to seeing you at our forthcoming events! What is the Cornwall Music Education Hub and what does it do? The Cornwall Music Education Hub is funded by the Department for Education, through Arts Council England, to support schools. It ‘s a partnership of organisations, led by Cornwall Council, who work together to provide quality musical activities for all children and young people in Cornwall. The Cornwall Music Education Hub does not deliver instrumental tuition but helps children and young people to access high quality musical learning through a variety of ways: Support for schools in the form of grants for First Access (introduction to learning an instrument), projects, CPD, resources, workshops and events Training and support for classroom teachers in primary and secondary schools to improve the teaching of music A network of county level orchestras and choirs Grants for regional youth ensembles Opportunities to perform in large scale events, including cluster projects and festivals Opportunities to work with professional musicians from all over the world in workshops and masterclasses Visit our website for more information—www.cornwallmusiceducationhub.org Hubbub 2018 The Hub returns to Heartlands in Pool on the 21st and 22nd June for our annual music festival for schools and for the first time ever on the 10th and 11th July we will be at The Royal Cornwall Showground. Like previous years we will be inviting schools from across Cornwall to bring classes of students to take part in a day of workshops featuring this year’s theme– Music and Movement! T: 01872 327351 Email: [email protected] www.cornwallmusiceducationhub.org 1 Vocal Strategy Update Songfest 2018 - ‘A Song For All Seasons ’ Starting at the Hall For Cornwall on 26th February, Songfest returned with a bang and continued on into March. Approximately 1000 children from across the county came together to create a massed choir for the Hub’s series of nine Songfest concerts held in 7 different venues : Hall for Cornwall, Helston Methodist Church, Launceston Town Hall, Saltash Wesley Methodist Church, Wadebridge School and the Keay Theatre in St Austell. All the events were led by the talented Angela Renshaw and Patrick Bailey. At each event, the theme was ‘A Song for all Seasons,’ and the massed choir of children from schools in each local area performed traditional folk songs from the south west arranged by Chris Hoban. For seven of the nine concerts, the Songfest choirs were accompanied by a four piece band made up of teachers from CMST and other Hub registered providers. The first act at each of these concerts featured performances by talented students from local secondary schools, colleges, as well as the Hub’s own County Choirs. Songfest 2019 - ‘Stage and Screen!’ The Hub’s countywide celebration of singing will return next Spring with another series of concerts in venues across Cornwall. Next year’s Songfest will be themed around songs from Lin Marsh’s stage and screen repertoire. Songfest 2019 performances will run throughout March 2019; bookings are currently being finalised in readiness for the twilight meetings for schools in June 2018 (dates to be announced). Schools will be allocated a performance venue and date in their locality. If you would like to take part in Songfest 2019 ‘Stage and Screen’ please email the Hub office – [email protected] confirming your expression of interest. 2 Vocal Strategy Update Cornwall County Choirs In order to provide progression opportunities for singers across the county, the Cornwall Music Education Hub has a network of choirs operating throughout Cornwall for boys and girls. All our choirs are led by experienced vocal specialists and have many performance opportunities. The choirs are open to singers aged 8-19 who attend school/ college in Cornwall. There is an annual membership fee of £80 (£100 for the youth choir), payable in September each year (subsidies are available for children on Free School Meals, Children in Care and Children of Services Families). Our choirs operate throughout Cornwall with satellite groups from Penzance to Bude meeting locally and monthly massed rehearsals in Truro. Further information about our choirs and how to get involved can be found on: www.cornwallmusiceducationhub.org/ensembles- choirs/cmeh-county-choirs To keep updated with choir, orchestra and event news and information please follow and like our social media pages or register for updates on our website: www.cornwallmusiceducationhub.org cornwallmusiceducationhub CMusicHUB 3 Free support for singing in your schools As part of the Hub’s ongoing Vocal Strategy we are offering schools the opportunity for free support through the School Engagement Vocal Outreach Workshops, with the aim of visiting every primary school in Cornwall over the academic year. These free one-hour vocal workshops, usually for Key Stage 2 pupils, aim to help schools with their own vocal development and are delivered in school by one of the Hub’s Vocal Leaders. The workshops are specifically for teachers or vocal leaders who are keen to continue to improve the quality of singing in their own school, already have a choir they wish to develop or are looking to set up a choir. The School Engagement Workshops will be arranged to suit each school through discussion with the Vocal Leader. There will then be an opportunity to discuss with them any particular areas of support in terms of vo- cal development. In addition, all participating schools will be given a free 12 month membership to Sing Up. Our team of Vocal Leaders are now contacting schools to arrange visits but please contact the Hub office if you would like to arrange a visit - [email protected] Become a Cornish Singing School and celebrate the power of singing! Last year, the Hub launched a scheme which recognises schools where singing is already a key part of school life as well as supporting those who want to develop their own vocal strategy - Cornish Singing Schools. There is no cost for schools to get involved with the scheme and you will get access to advice, support and opportunities from the Hub plus one year’s free Sing Up membership. Any schools interested should contact Angela Renshaw: [email protected] The Hub are also excited to be able to offer some additional Cornish Singing Schools training to schools who took part last year, to revisit the framework and ensure your school is benefitting form this scheme. If you’re interested in taking up this offer or would like some more information please email; [email protected] 4 First Access Instruments for First Access We have lots of class sets of instruments which are available for schools to hire at the subsidised rate of £70 per term for a whole class (including delivery and collection). These instruments are perfect for schools who would like to offer First Access to their students but do not have instruments of their own. Class sets available include: Clarinet & Clarineo Guitar Flute Gamelan Saxophone Trumpet, Cornet & Trombones Ocarina & fife (available for £35 per term) African Drums & percussion Keyboards Taiko Drums Violin/cello/double bass/viola Samba Ukulele First Access - free introduction to learning an instrument for the whole class. The Hub is able to offer grants to schools to fund a music specialist to deliver whole class instrumental lessons. The grants are available to fund a 12 week programme called First Access which aims to introduce students (and their teacher!) in Key Stages 1-3 to learning an instrument. The programme consists of: An initial planning meeting with the classroom teacher and music leader 10 weekly 45 minute whole class lessons (students should learn the same instrument each week) A review meeting with the classroom teacher and music leader The grants are available for any classes who have not previously benefitted from the scheme (schools can access for more than one class). Schools will need to identify a suitable deliverer for the sessions and also source their own instruments. The Hub can assist in this as we have a list of teachers/organisations who are able to deliver First Access and also sets of instruments which can be hired at the subsidised rate of £70 per set per term. Further information about the programme and how to access the funding can be found on www.cornwallmusiceducationhub.org/first-access or please contact the Hub Manager: Tanya Moore - [email protected] 5 Ensemble update CYWO EASTER CONCERT One of the Hub’s county orchestras, the Cornwall Youth Wind Orchestra, held their Easter Concert at Truro Cathedral on Saturday 14th April. The concert was a culmination of the players’ hard work over the year, playing a vibrant and engaging range of pieces including; The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Alex Poelman Zodiac Dances by Phillip Sparke A Thames Journey by Nigel Hess The Hounds of Spring by Alfred Reed What made this concert even more memorable was the passing of the conductor’s baton from Janet Elston to our NEW CYWO conductor, Sara Munns.
