Don Quixote on the Big Screen

Don Quixote on the Big Screen (A Film Series in Celebration of the IV Centennial of Don Quixote Part II, 1615-2015) In recognition of the 400th anniversary of the publication of Part II of Don Quixote de la Mancha (1615-2015), the Observatorio de la Lengua Española y las Culturas Hispánicas en los Estados Unidos and the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University, in collaboration with the Voces Hispánicas/Hispanic Voices initiative of the Department of Romance Studies of Boston University, will present a series of classic, and lesser-known, film versions of Miguel de Cervantes’s masterpiece. Each screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring both Cervantes scholars and film specialists; audience participation will be encouraged. The series will run over the course of the entire anniversary year. Films to be screened during the spring semester include Arthur Hiller’s Man of La Mancha (1972), starring Peter O’Toole and Sophia Loren; Terry Gilliam’s Lost in La Mancha (2002), starring Johnny Depp and Jean Rochefort; Rafael Gil’s Don Quijote de la Mancha (1948), starring Rafael Rebelles; and Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón’s El caballero Don Quijote (2001), starring Fernando Rey. The screenings are free and open to the public; subtitles in English where applicable. Don Quixote on the Big Screen is made possible through the generosity of Santander Universities, a division of Santander Bank.
