Member of the Multicultural Communities Council of SA Inc. 2018 SCOTTISH DATEBOOK and DIRECTORY Peter Waite (1834-1922) Scottish Associaitons of SA Website: www.scotasa.com.au Peter Waite Peter Waite was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland in 1834, the third son of James and Elizabeth Waite. His father died in the same year leaving his mother to carry on the modest family farm, Pitcairn, and raise their children, James (5), David (3), and Peter (5 months). Peter undertook an apprenticeship in ironmongery, and worked in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. In 1859 Peter decided to join his brothers who had migrated to the Colony of South Australia. At the time he had been engaged to Matilda Methuen and she agreed to wait until he was in a position to send for her. On arrival in Adelaide in 1859 Peter joined his brother James at ‘Pandappa’, a pastoral property near Terowie in the north east of South Australia. Peter quickly adapted to the harsh conditions and in 1862 Thomas Elder offered him the lease of a nearby property, ‘Paratoo’. When James Waite was drowned in 1863, while crossing a flooded creek on horseback, Peter took over both stations. By 1864, Peter had established himself as a pastoralist and property manager, and the ‘Paratoo’ homestead had been made comfortable. He was now in a position to send for his fiancée, Matilda. She sailed for South Australia on the maiden voyage of the ‘City of Adelaide’ and their marriage took place at Robert Barr Smith’s home at Woodville in November 1864. Together they had 8 children. He gained immense wealth from pastoral enterprises and partnership in Elder Smith & Co. He was Chairman of Directors for nearly 40 years. He gave 10,000 pounds ($1.25M) to establish an Officers Provident Fund. Over his lifetime he gave generous financial support to the University of Adelaide and other needy causes. Following his death, he bequeathed his property Urrbrae House and surrounding land of 134 acres to the University of Adelaide, along with 65,000 pounds ($8M) to set up a trust fund which ultimately resulted in the foundation of Waite Agricultural Research Institute. He refused to accept a Knighthood saying that he was too old, but it would have gone against his lowland Scottish dislike of unnecessary show. 1 | P a g e The Scottish Associations of South Australia, Inc Date Book 2018 INDEX EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE 2017 – 2018 .................................................... 4 PRESIDENTS SINCE INCEPTION .............................................................. 5 LIST OF MEMBERS 2018 .............................................................................. 6 DATEBOOK – SOCIAL EVENTS - 2018 ..................................................... 8 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SCOTTISH CLANS ............................................ 12 SCOTTISH CLUBS & SOCIETIES ............................................................ 14 SCOTTISH HIGHLAND DANCE SCHOOLS ........................................... 18 SASCHDI - Highland Dancing Competition & Events 2018 ..................... 21 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PIPE BANDS ........................................................ 24 PIPING COMPETITIONS, PIOBAIREACHD & BAGPIPES ................ 28 SCOTTISH PIPERS FOR ENGAGEMENTS ............................................ 30 SCOTTISH RADIO STATIONS .................................................................. 31 KILT MAKERS .............................................................................................. 31 TARTAN AMBASSADOR IN AUSTRALIA ............................................. 31 SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCE GROUPS ............................................... 32 SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCE CLASSES & CONTACTS .................. 34 SCOTTISH ENTERTAINERS ..................................................................... 36 CLIPPER SHIP – CITY OF ADELAIDE ................................................... 37 MASONIC LODGES ..................................................................................... 37 COMPERES, BURNS HISTORIANS, SPEAKERS .................................. 38 GAELIC – Spoken and Written .................................................................... 38 MARRIAGE & FUNERAL CELEBRANTS .............................................. 38 SCOTTISH TRADE SHOPS......................................................................... 39 INTERSTATE SCOTTISH SOCIETIES & CLANS ................................. 40 SCOTTISH WEBSITES - South Australia ................................................. 42 2 | P a g e 3 | P a g e The Scottish Associations of South Australia, Inc EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE 2017 – 2018 PRESIDENT Mr. John McNeil (08) 8333 3990 Email: [email protected] VICE PRESIDENT Mr. Allan Lewis m 0408 002 070 PO Box 151, Kilkenny SA 5009 SECRETARY Ms Chris Forbes (08) 8276 4160 Email: [email protected] PUBLIC OFFICER Mr. John McNeil (08) 8333 3990 Email: [email protected] TREASURER Mr. Arthur Littlejohns (08) 8260 4397 Please address all correspondence to The Secretary The Scottish Associations of South Australia, Inc.
