The duty station for this position is Burley, Idaho. There is no government housing for the position. The purpose of this Outreach Notice is to inform prospective applicants of this upcoming opportunity. THE POSITION The position’s primary responsibility is planning and implementing the recreation, trails, scenery, land use permits, and recreation special uses program, including two downhill Ski Area permits. This position is supervised by the District Ranger and may also serve as Acting District Ranger during the Ranger’s absence, and is a member of the District Leadership Team. The position supervises one full-time GS-9, who supervises and potentially up to three seasonal employees (funding dependent). The Incumbent is part of the District Leadership Team and provides overall recreation program management for the Minidoka Ranger District. The incumbent will plan program, budget, and produce direct work for current, annual, and long range management needs. Plans and directs the care of policing, fee administration, maintenance, opening and closing of dispersed and developed recreation areas, signing and protection of trails and facilities. May serve as specialist in District environmental analysis and write associated documents. This position provides and prepares written communication for the District Ranger to approve and sign. Develops and maintains effective external cooperative relationships with local governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations and others interested in partnering with the Forest Service. The Minidoka Ranger District has an active recreation program with 25 developed sites, 670 miles of trail, three tracts of recreation residences, 4 organization camps, a variety of lands and recreation special uses including two ski areas and wide spread dispersed recreation. The Minidoka Ranger District is made up of five distinct divisions each with their own character ranging from primitive to highly developed. Visitation occurs throughout the year with an active summer as well as winter recreation program. THE SAWTOOTH NATIONAL FOREST The 2.1 million-acre Sawtooth National Forest is divided into four management units – the Minidoka, Ketchum and Fairfield Ranger Districts and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Elevations range from 4,513 to 12,009 feet above sea level offering a great variety of land forms and vegetation. The Sawtooth mountain region sits at the convergence of three mountain ranges and provides some spectacular alpine scenery. In addition to dozens of perpetually snow-capped peaks, there are countless lakes, thick forests and the headwaters of the Salmon River churning its way through the spectacular Sawtooth Valley. The Forest extends from northern Utah to the Salmon River country in Idaho. More than two million visitor days of recreation occur annually on the Forest with four downhill ski areas, including the world-premiere Bald Mountain Ski Area at Sun Valley and world class Nordic ski trails in the Wood River Valley. Recreation is year-round, with summer being the busiest time of year. Recreation activities include developed and dispersed camping, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, floating, fishing, lake shore recreation, mountain biking, motorcycling, snowmobiling, and skiing. The Forest administers the 217,088 acre Sawtooth Wilderness and the newly designed Hemingway-Boulders and White Clouds Wilderness Areas (158,772 acres). There are approximately 120 permanent/full-time employees on the Forest in addition to 100 seasonal employees. COMMUNITY INFORMATION Burley, Idaho is located in south central Idaho and is a two and a half hour drive from Boise (the state capitol) to the west, an hour from Pocatello to the east, and a three hour drive south to Salt Lake City, Utah. Burley is located at a high-desert elevation of 4,150 feet above sea level and the Snake River flows through the community. The population of Burley is approximately 10,000. Residents of this City enjoy a very distinct four-season climate. Daytime highs in July are about 91 degrees with overnight lows of 54. January temperatures typically range from about 37 in the daytime to 19 overnight. Annual precipitation averages 17 inches of snow and nine inches of rain. Residents enjoy sunny skies nearly 300 days annually, and the air is dry and clear. Burley offers a number of well-developed and maintained city parks and a number of organized events, hiking trails, water skiing, and boating. Outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities are just a short drive from Burley. These include the Craters of the Moon National Monument, City of Rocks National Reserve, the Sawtooth National Forest and a number of state parks and heritage attractions.
