4Th-8Th January 2021 – Waimakariri and Selwyn

58th SOUTH ISLAND PRIMARY SCHOOLS CRICKET TOURNAMENT 4th-8th January 2021 – Waimakariri and Selwyn Thank You to our GOLD sponsors Welcome to Canterbury Country On behalf of the Canterbury Cricket Association it is my pleasure to welcome all thirty teams to this, the 58th South Island Primary School’s Tournament to be played throughout Waimakariri and Selwyn. All South Island provinces have made the trip to our district for this week. As well as the players, it is a warm welcome to the coaches, managers, parents, supporters, administrators and sponsors of these teams. This is the fifth occasion that Canterbury Country has hosted this tournament and we look forward to another wonderful week of cricket, and the building of friendships. From this tournament over the past 57 years a number of players have gone up through the age grade groups to represent their provinces, and even on to the highest honours of representing New Zealand. Whilst it is healthy for players to have aspirations and dreams of playing for the Blackcaps in the future, I’d like to encourage all adults involved with this tournament to positively praise the effort the players put into matches throughout the week, rather than reverting to focusing on performances, stats and results. Playing in this tournament gives players the opportunity to represent their province and to play alongside players from other clubs or schools. The friendships formed in this tournament will hopefully be long standing as the players continue to play cricket into the future. A tournament such as this could not be run without the help of a large number of volunteers. Our work as an Association started over a year ago with the initial planning. From there the ground preparation was started, ground managers were organised, and umpires were approached. Thank you to all those people who offered their time and expertise. Without you all we would not be able to offer this opportunity to these teams. Canterbury Country Cricket are also grateful to those sponsors who came on board in the running of this week. Check your programme to note who they are, and if you get a chance to say, “thank you”, then please do so. In conclusion, I wish every team the very best for the week, take away some great memories of your play, but overall enjoy yourself. Thank you Canterbury Country Cricket Association would like to thank the following clubs and organisations for providing venues for the SIPST Cup and Shield. • Sefton Cricket Club • Rangiora Cricket Club • Southbrook Cricket Club • Kaiapoi Cricket Club • Waimakariri District Council • Ohoka Cricket Club • Selwyn District Council • Weedons Cricket Club • Lincoln Cricket Club • Tai Tapu Cricket Club Without the support of these organisations assistance we would not have been capable of bringing the SIPST to the Waimakariri and Selwyn districts. SIPST CHANGE OF PHILOSOPHY Canterbury Country is very excited about the prospect of hosting the 58th SIPST. Since the last instalment of the SIPST in Buller in 2020, a lot of water has gone under the bridge regarding adjustments that have been made to the SIPST. In 2021 it will be the first time that a SIPST Shield section has been included. The shield section has been made available to all districts to enter additional teams into. Canterbury Country approached Otago Cricket and Canterbury Cricket in regard to this more inclusive model. This approach has been looked upon positively and has been supported by both Otago Cricket and Canterbury Cricket due to more players being given opportunities to experience a tournament. As a coach, the ability to give all players equal opportunities to experience batting, bowling and fielding in different positions will ultimately be what players remember more than the winning or losing or matches. Cricket is a late specialisation sport, so only allowing players to play one singular role within a team throughout a week of cricket is not healthy at this age and stage. As a parent, the ability to positively praise effort, sportsmanship, and teamwork for your children rather than focusing on performances, stats and results will influence the players experience throughout the tournament. It is proven that childhood success isn’t an accurate predictor of adulthood success or elitism. I encourage all coaches and parents to take pressure off your players and focus on helping them enjoy the tournament. Players will always play to win when they are on the field, so adding pressure and hefty expectations onto players could ultimately cause them to walk away from the great sport of cricket at an earlier age than we’d like. Cricket is making some big strides towards being a sport where the focus is on a climate of development at the year 7 and 8 age group, rather than being focused on a climate of performance. It is exciting to see this transition taking place. The more progress we make the more players we will keep in our great game for longer. To all players, parents, coaches please enjoy your week here in Canterbury Country. Success during the week shouldn’t be judged on winning or losing, it should be judged on how many players want to come back again next season.
