JACKSONVILLE JUMBO SHRIMP GAME NOTES Mobile BayBears (3-3) at Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (2-4) Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp – Double-A Affiliate of the Miami Marlins Proud Member of the Southern League of Professional Baseball Southern League Champions 1996, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2014 Thursday April 12, 2018 – 7:05 p.m. Bragan Field at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville - Jacksonville, Florida. BayBears: RHP Luis Pena (0-0, 0.00) vs. Shrimp: RHP Nick Neidert (0-0, 7.36) Game #7 – Home Game #2 (1-0) Last Game: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp outfielder Austin Dean went 4-for-4, while catcher Rodrigo Vigil had a two-run home run and three RBIs to lead a 9-5 win over the Mobile BayBears before 6,960 watched the fireworks on Opening Day presented by Firehouse Subs. After a ceremonial first pitch by Bette Bolivar, Commander Navy Region Southeast, JJ Grey performing the national anthem and a flyover by HSM-74, Jumbo Shrimp right-hander Cody Poteet kept Mobile (3-3) scoreless for four innings. Jacksonville (2-4) opened the scoring against BayBears right-hander Jesus Castillo (1-1) in the third inning, when Vigil hit a leadoff infield single to shortstop Connor Justus and went to second base on Justus’ errant throw. Designated hitter Kyle Barrett lined an RBI single to left field for a 1-0 lead. Dean began the fourth inning with a single to shallow right field and went to third base on center fielder Monte Harrison’s single to left field. Harrison stole second base before walks to third baseman Brian Schales and Vigil. Shortstop Chris Diaz grounded a two-run single to left field, and Barrett reached on a ground ball that Justus threw past his catcher at home plate. Once Castillo departed for right-hander Jeremy Rhoades, Jacksonville first baseman Eric Jagielo plated a run with a fielder’s choice, and Dean’s second hit of the inning – an infield single – to Justus, scored the last of six runs in the inning. With a 7-0 lead, Poteet allowed a hit batter, walk and two hits to score two runs in the top of the fifth inning before leaving after 4 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. Right-hander Kolton Mahoney (1-2) came in for 2 1/3 innings, yielding three runs – one earned – on three hits. Vigil’s fifth-inning, two-run home run to left field – his first since July 27, 2014, with short-season Batavia – extended a 9-2 lead. After Mahoney, right-hander Esmerling De La Rosa pitched the final two scoreless innings of the 9-5 triumph. UPCOMING SCHEDULE AND PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS DATE OPP. Vigil’s two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the fifth gave Jacksonville a 9-2 lead, and was the first home run that Vigil has hit since he played for the Short Season Class A Batavia Muckdogs in 2014. On July 27, 2014, Vigil hit his last home run, against the Williamsport Crosscutters. Vigil’s Wednesday night homer was just the fourth of his minor league career, with previous homers with Batavia (2014), the GCL Marlins (2013), and the DSL Marlins (2011). Vigil has caught four of Jacksonville’s first six games, and is hitting .267 with his home run and three runs batted in. Austin Duval Dean: I don’t care what his biography says, his name isn’t Ausitn James Dean. It’s Austin DUVAL Dean. Back at home at the Baseball Grounds for his third straight Jacksonville Opening Day, Dean went 4-for-4 with an RBI against the BayBears, and was named the Navy Mutual MVP of the Game. In his postgame interview with Marco LaNave on the field, he fired up the crowd by starting a long DUUUUUVVALLL chant before the fireworks show. Dean was a Southern League All-Star in 2016, and his bat in the second half of the 2017 season propelled Jacksonville to a second half South Division title. The Green, Green Grass of Home: The Jumbo Shrimp are sure glad to be back at home on Florida’s First Coast. Last year Jacksonville was a rich home field advantage for the Shrimp, with the club posting a 43-27 record at the Baseball Grounds. The second half especially featured a home field advantage for the Shrimp, going 25-10 while losing only one home series in the second half en route to a second half South Division title. The Jumbo Shrimp were also 11-3 in home series last year at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Oh Hi BayBears: This is the first of four series this season between the Jumbo Shrimp and the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. The BayBears will make a return trip to Jacksonville from May 17-21, while the two Jumbo Shrimp visits to Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile will be in the second half from July 4-7 and July 28-August 1. Last year Jacksonville had a winning record against Mobile, going 14-7 overall. The clubs split the two series at Hank Aaron Stadium 5-5, while the Jumbo Shrimp were 9-2 against the BayBears at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville last season. Home Opening Series Wins: The first series of the year in Jacksonville has been kind to the franchise in the Miami Marlins era of Jacksonville baseball (2009- present). In the previous nine home openers at the Baseball Grounds, Jacksonville has a record of 6-3, and Jacksonville has also gone 6-3 in terms of series wins and losses in the first home series during that time span. The last time Jacksonville lost a series during their first homestand was 2014, losing four of five games to the Huntsville Stars after winning the Opening Night game. Jacksonville has won three straight home opening series at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Shrimp Have Prospects: On the Opening Day roster, the Jumbo Shrimp have five players who are listed by MLB.com as Top 30 Miami Marlins prospects for the 2018 season: OF Monte Harrison (2), Isan Diaz (8), RHP Nick Neidert (10), RHP Merandy Gonzalez (16), and RHP Pablo Lopez (24), who is currently on Jacksonville’s disabled list. All five of these prospects were acquired by the Marlins in trades within the past 12 months.
