In springtime wild flowers are abundant. Starting from the village of Nyer, notable for its imposing castle, the route passes through the villages of Marians and Souanyas, high above the Têt valley. It then climbs to an open plateau with views towards both the Mediterranean coastal plain and to surrounding hills and mountains. The descent back to Nyer is on a regional long- distance path through sunlit woodland. The paths and tracks followed on the circuit are well-used, but careful route-finding is sometimes called for. Cet itinéraire traverse une zone très diverse. On peut le parcourir à pied pendant n'importe quel mois de l'année. Au printemps, les fleurs des champs sont abondantes. Au départ du village de Nyer, remarquable par son château imposant, le parcours passe par les villages de Marians et de Souanyas, perchés bien au-dessus de la vallée de la Têt. Puis on monte vers un plateau ouvert avec des vues à la fois sur la plaine côtière méditerranéenne et sur les collines et montagnes environnantes. La descente vers Nyer se fait sur un sentier de grande randonnée de pays à travers une forêt ensoleillée. Les sentiers et les pistes du circuit sont populaires, mais il faut parfois faire preuve de prudence pour trouver son chemin. 1 - START. Nyer, in the upper part of the village, with the Maison de la Réserve on the right. (The château is on the left). At the street junction below, we go to the right, along the D57, in the direction of Olette... Just beyond the village, near a bend in the road before a washplace, a grassy path goes up on the right. We go up that path, to a path-road junction. We go to the right, along the road for a few metres, to a: Point de départ. Nyer, dans la partie supérieure du village, avec la Maison de la Réserve à droite. (Le château se trouve à gauche). À la bifurcation en contrebas, nous prenons à droite, le long de la D57, en direction d'Olette... Juste après le village, à un virage de la route avant un lavoir, un sentier herbeux monte sur la droite. Nous remontons ce sentier, jusqu'à une intersection du sentier et une petite route. Nous prenons à droite, le long de la route pendant quelques mètres, jusqu'à une: 2 - Junction of the road and (on the left) a track, with an old sign saying Voie Privée (but the track is open to walkers). We go to the left, up the unsurfaced track. The track bears to the left. The track becomes a path and it traverses the hillside, climbing gently... There are excellent views back to Nyer, ahead to Canaveilles, and (to the left) to En. Intersection de la route et (à gauche) d'une piste, avec un vieux panneau indiquant "Voie Privée" (mais la piste est ouverte aux randonneurs). Nous prenons à gauche, en remontant la piste. La piste prend à gauche. La piste devient un sentier et traverse le coteau, en montant doucement... On a une excellente vue sur Nyer (derrière), sur Canaveilles (en face) et sur En (à gauche). 3 - Path fork, just before an electricity pylon. We ignore all the yellow waymarks here, and we go along the path to the right. Bifurcation du sentier, juste avant un pylône électrique. Nous ne tenons aucun compte du balisage jaune ici, et nous prenons le sentier sur la droite. 4 - Path-road junction. We go to the left, down the road... On the edge of Marians village, we follow the road as it turns sharply to the left. The road winds down to: Intersection du sentier et d'une petite route. Nous allons à gauche, en descendant la route... A l'entrée du village de Marians, nous suivons la route qui tourne brusquement à gauche. La route descend jusqu'au: 2 5 - The centre of Marians, where another road joins on the left. There is a splendid viewpoint across the Têt valley, towards Oreilla, Evol (and its medieval castle), and to the mountains beyond. We go straight ahead, along the road, and we leave the village... At a road junction (the road to the left goes down to Olette), we go straight ahead... We follow the road as it climbs towards Souanyas village. We go right through the village and descend to; Centre de Marians, où une autre petite route se rejoint sur la gauche. Il y a un splendide point de vue sur la vallée de la Têt, vers Oreilla, Evol (et son château médiéval), et vers les montagnes au-delà. Nous continuons tout droit, le long de la route, et nous quittons le village... A un embranchement (la route à gauche descend vers Olette), nous continuons tout droit... Nous suivons la route qui monte vers le village de Souanyas. Nous traversons tout le village et nous descendons à: 6 - The far end of Souanyas. (Here, a path on the left also goes down to Olette.) We leave the village, going straight ahead, on an unsurfaced track. The track descends a little and soon goes under a power line... The track contours around the hillside. La sortie du village Souanyas. (Ici, un sentier sur la gauche descend également vers Olette.) Nous quittons le village, en allant tout droit, sur une piste non-goudronné. La piste descend un peu et passe bientôt sous une ligne électrique... La piste contourne le versant de la colline. 7 - Track fork. We go to the right. A long ascent begins here... Under the power line again, we ignore another track which go to the left and we go up our track which zig-zags up the open hillside... At a track junction we go to the left. The track, here on the level, soon brings us to a: Bifurcation de piste. Nous allons à droite. Une longue ascension commence ici... Sous la ligne électrique encore nous ignorons une autre piste qui va à gauche et nous montons notre piste qui zigzague sur le flanc ouvert de la colline... A une intersection de pistes, nous partons à gauche. La piste, ici en palier, nous amène bientôt à un: 8 - Complex track junction. We turn to the right, and then we immediately turn to the right again. Our track climbs again... At a track fork, we follow the main track to the left. The track bears to the right, with a meadow on the right. At a track fork we go to the left. At a track junction we go to the left. (A little distance away on the left is a landscaped hillside where there was formerly a huge fluorspar quarry.) Our track bears to the right. There is then a fairly long, steady climb to a: Intersection complexe de pistes. Nous allons vers la droite, puis tout de suite de nouveau à droite. Notre piste monte encore... À une bifurcation, nous suivons la piste principale sur la gauche. La piste tourne à droite, avec un pré à droite. À une bifurcation, nous nous dirigeons vers la gauche. À une intersection, nous prenons à gauche. (Un peu plus loin sur la gauche se trouve un coteau restauré où se trouvait autrefois une énorme carrière de spath fluor). Notre piste porte à droite. Il y a ensuite une montée assez longue et régulière jusqu'à une: 9 - Junction of tracks, at a sharp bend in the track opposite. We go to the left, and we follow the track opposite. There is a pylon on the right... The track emerges onto a plateau, with another pylon, on the right. We continue straight ahead towards a: Intersection de pistes, dans un virage serré de la piste d'en face. Nous allons à gauche, et nous suivons la piste d'en face. Il y a une antenne sur la droite... La piste arrive sur un plateau, avec une autre antenne, sur la droite. Nous continuons tout droit vers un: 3 10 - Crossing of tracks. (The preserved remains of a furnace, formerly used for treating the iron ore which used to be mined nearby, is visible on the left.) We follow the track opposite, on the right (we ignore a yellow cross)... The track contours around the hillside and it passes a farm building, on the right... We go past a former iron ore mining area, with old mine buildings on the left. A path joins our track on the left. We follow the track uphill and we soon arrive at a: Carrefour des pistes. (On peut voir sur la gauche les vestiges préservés d'un four, qui servait autrefois à traiter le minerai de fer qui était extrait à proximité). Nous suivons la piste d'en face, à droite (nous ne tenons aucun compte d'une croix jaune)... La piste contourne le flanc de la colline et passe à côté d'un bâtiment agricole, sur la droite... Nous passons devant une ancienne zone d'extraction de minerai de fer, avec de vieux bâtiments de mine sur la gauche. Un sentier rejoint notre piste sur la gauche. Nous suivons la piste en montant et nous arrivons bientôt à une: 11 - Track-path fork. We go to the right, along the path.
