Roots and Fruits Discovering the history of your family is an interest of many people, today. The BBC has a very popular programme in which some well-known individual researches his or her family tree; and what is discovered is often surprising – sometimes welcome, sometimes not. Quite often, visitors to St. Lawrence's (and these can be visitors from distant lands) come trying to trace ancestors who are thought to be buried here. There is in most of us, I suppose, a deep curiosity about where we come from, about how we came to be where we come from, about how we came to be where we are, and also about who we have become. Because none of us just appeared. Our lives are the result, to a greater or lesser degree, of the lives of our forebears. They are our roots; we are their fruits. So who am I? And, when I ask that question, I'm thinking of more than my place in the family tree. Am I of any more importance than just one more of the billions of human-beings in the world? When I was Christened I was given a name and not a number. So as a 'one-off' with my unique identity, what is my value? And by whom am I valued? My closest relative or friend knows only so much about me. But who values all the hidden me below the surface, all that I don't even know myself? Well as Christians, we dare to believe that the great mystery we call 'God' knows and cherishes the whole me, the real me.
