Dear Bar and Foundation Leaders

Dear Bar and Foundation Leaders: Welcome to Atlanta for the midyear meetings of the National Association of Bar Executives, the National Conference of Bar Presidents and the National Conference of Bar Foundations. This booklet contains information about programming scheduled February 8 through February 12, sponsored collectively and individually by the groups. NABE programming begins on Wednesday, February 9, with the plenary session, “Future of the Profession,” and sets the stage for a yearlong discussion about how state, metro, county and specialty bar associations can work together with bar leaders, bar members, the judiciary and law schools to address various challenges facing the profession. Roundtable discussions by bar membership size will continue the future-focused conversation followed by track programs that look at print in the digital age, PCI compliance, financial literacy for staff and bar leaders, staff development, services for solo and small firms and other areas of interest. Joint NCBP/NABE/NCBF programming starts on Friday, February 10, with a plenary session by Professor Thomas Morgan, author of The Vanishing American Lawyer, who will examine how the recession has visibly transformed the legal profession. After the plenary, registrants organized by bar association type (unified, voluntary, local and metro) will share their bar’s efforts in navigating a changing legal landscape, then attend the first set of workshops on topics including virtual lawyering, local bench/bar relations, and member efforts that match demographics. The joint awards luncheon will recognize recipients of the NCBP Fellows Award, Outstanding Law Day Awards, the Judge Edward R. Finch Law Day Award and the Louis M. Brown Awards. Post-luncheon programming includes a second session of workshops focusing on diversity in a tough economy, attracting and keeping sponsors, pro bono for seniors and veterans, and other timely issues. Members of the Metropolitan Bar Caucus will discuss best practices in their respective bar associations, while NCBF will explore annual campaigns, revenue sources and the pros and cons of using Facebook. Saturday morning provides another opportunity for NCBP members to network with colleagues from similar size bars during breakfast and roundtable discussions, plus features an address by ABA President Stephen N. Zack and a program on how bar associations can address public dissatisfaction with lawyers. NCBF’s Saturday programming will concentrate on planning a successful endowment campaign and starting a planned giving program. Beyond program and event descriptions, this booklet also contains information about our generous sponsors. Please go to the sponsor networking breaks and say thanks or remember to send a note once you return home. We also extend our appreciation to NABE, NCBP and NCBF committees in planning this week’s sessions and social events. We hope that you’ll find the programming constructive and useful for your bar. Your feedback and suggestions are helpful as we plan for future meetings, so please complete the evaluations that will be sent to you via email after the meeting. Have a great time in Atlanta! Sincerely, Carolyn Witt, NABE President James P. Nolan, NCBP President Thomas R. Tinder, NCBF President ATLANTA, GEORGIA 1 All events will take place at the Marriott Marquis Atlanta, 265 Peachtree Center Avenue, (404) 521-0000, unless otherwise indicated.
