Holman A DIVERSE ASSOCIATION WITH DIFFERENT APPROACHES Dear Esteemed Colleagues, Last summer Patrick Healy put together a dynamic June Conference on the coast of Maine—now it’s my turn to invite you to the mountains of Vermont for the annual election of new officers and resource-rich congregation of suppliers. Please join us to share our unique perspectives in the industry, shared New England heritage and friendship. It might surprise you that we do not all approach things the same in New England. We seem to share our common experiences often, but these do not reflect our true makeup. Our Association is as diverse as our terrain, soils or personalities. Be careful not to fall into the trap of thinking you know how the other cemetery operates, or that they are just too different to offer relevant insight into your own operation. R. Buckminster Fuller once observed “we still say the words sunrise and sunset, even though we have known for hundreds of years that the earth revolves around the sun!” Someone then suggested alternatives which he quickly adopted. Limited experience gives us all a specialized viewpoint, a locally-focused “we know best” blindness and ignorance. This specialization can be debilitating, precluding the possible discovery of powerful tools to aid us. Remember that every time we meet as an Association we learn more, that we cannot possibly learn less. Would you like to test your know- how outside your own cemetery? These live meetings become pivotal in our lives. In the words of Fuller, I encourage you to “freshly reconsider thoughts relevant to our mutual interests.” This is the reason the New England Cemetery Association exists folks. We value your continued commitment. Respectfully, James E. Holman, NECA President 2 3 OFFICERS 2018–2019 James Holman, President David Boyle, Vice President Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA Town of Chelmsford Cemetery Dept., Chelmsford, MA Mary Anne Hawthorne, 2nd Vice Pres.
