LEO CHADBURN THE INDISTINGUISHABLES FOR STRING QUARTET AND PRE-RECORDED VOICE (2014) FULL SCORE Leo Chadburn The Indistinguishables (2014) For string quartet and pre-recorded voice Revised score - November 2014 First performance: Quatour Bozzini - 17th June 2014 Maison des jeunesses musicales du Canada, Montreal. First performance of revised version: Quatour Bozzini - 23rd November 2014 Huddersfield Town Hall / Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival The text is a list of seventy British common names of moth species, spoken by a disembodied voice, accompanied by brief musical figures that form ‘soundtracks’ to each one, separated by pauses. The playback of each name should be triggered by a member of the quartet, using a foot pedal. A QLab file of recordings by actor Gemma Saunders was used in the first performance (materials available from the composer.) The voice should be carefully balanced with the quartet - if the quartet are unamplified, the speakers could be placed behind / amongst the players. The pauses should be ‘felt’ - the half-note / minim + fermata has no metrical value. Aim for the pauses to be of varying lengths, sometimes rather long, sometimes shorter, always maintaining a dramatic tension. Vertical dashed coordination lines are marked in the score, indicating attacks played in time with a syllable / syllables of the voice. Notation of the rhythm of the vocal is very approximate - take the timings from the recording. ‘Whole notes / semibreves’ have no metrical value - they indicate a note one full bow long. Hence dynamic / bow speed affects the length of each of these notes. The quartet should always change bow together when playing the ‘whole notes.’ Filled-in / black noteheads indicate a shorter bow, coordinated with the voice. Lengths of tremolo notes should be ‘felt.’ Duration: c. 18 minutes The Satellite [Eupsilia transversa] Strange Wave [Idaea laevigata] Rhomboid Tortrix [Acleris rhombana] The Many-lined [Costaconvexa polygrammata] Clouded Border [Lomaspilis marginata] Lunar Double-stripe [Minucia lunaris] The Passenger [Dysgonia algira] Gold Triangle [Hypsopygia costalis] Small Black Arches [Meganola strigula] Sorcerer [Aedia leucomelas] The Traveller [Costaconvexa centrostrigaria] Small Grass Emerald [Chlorissa viridata] Chalk Carpet [Scotopteryx bipunctaria] Small Rivulet [Perizoma alchemillata] Clouded August Thorn [Ennomos quercaria] Pine Processionary [Thaumetopoea pityocampa] Frosted Green [Polyploca ridens] Bordered Pearl [Paratalanta pandalis] Scarlet Tiger [Callimorpha dominula] Map-winged Swift [Hepialus fusconebulosa] The Forester [Adscita statices] Merveille du Jour [Dichonia aprilina] Satin Lutestring [Tetheella fluctuosa] Peach Blossom [Thyatira batis] Beautiful Golden Y [Autographa pulchrina] Mother of Pearl [Pleuroptya ruralis] The Festoon [Apoda limacodes] Yellow Horned [Achlya flavicornis] Feathered Beauty [Peribatodes secundaria] The Gem [Orthonama obstipata] The Nonconformist [Lithophane lamda] Pistol Case-bearer [Coleophora anatipennella] The Shark [Cucullia umbratica] Dark Dagger [Acronicta tridens] Blood-vein [Timandra comae] Slender Burnished Brass [Thysanoplusia orichalcea] Heart & Club [Agrotis clavis] The Drinker [Euthrix potatoria] Silver Hook [Deltote uncula] The Seraphim [Lobophora halterata] The Exile [Apamea zeta] Old World Webworm [Hellula undalis] The Confused [Apamea furva] Large Dark Prominent [Notodonta torva] Feathered Ear [Pachetra sagittigera] The Lackey [Malacosoma neustria] Silver Cloud [Egira conspicillaris] Scarce Forester [Jordanita globulariae] The Triangle [Heterogenea asella] Water Veneer [Acentria ephemerella] The Alchymist [Catephia alchymista] Spotted Sulphur [Emmelia trabealis] The Geometrician [Prodotis stolida] Tamarisk Plume [Agdistis tamaricis] The Vestal [Rhodometra sacraria] Figure of Eighty [Tethea ocularis] Chinese Character [Cilix glaucata] Fiery Clearwing [Pyropteron chrysidiformis] The Flame [Axylia putris] The Phoenix [Eulithis prunata] The Gothic [Naenia typica] Apple Leaf Skeletonizer [Choreutis pariana] Pale Stigma [Mesogona acetosellae] Thistle Ermine [Myelois circumvoluta] Silvery Arches [Polia trimaculosa] White-speck [Mythimna unipuncta] Old Lady [Mormo Maura] Small Angle Shades [Euplexia lucipara] The Vapourer [Orgyia antiqua] Ghost Moth [Hepialus humuli] .
