The earliest birth date of one Tim's documented ancesters belongs to his gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather John McCroskey, born in Scotland in 1680. Other seminal families for whom we have information are: on Tim's Father's side: Daniel and Catherine Leehan and Daniel's brothers <<< James and Mary Kingston <<< Nancy Carberry and her brothers and sisters <<< Grace Anderson <<< and on his Mother's side: Richard and Martha (Evans) Barnhouse <<< John and Elizabeth (Gay) McCroskey <<< Nathan & Susanna (Allen) Laird <<< Nicholas Haskins <<< Almeron Hill <<< G.S. and Gatha Sprouse <<< Judy Carey* Sarah Hayes* Margaret Walker* Mary Jane Price* Mary Castro* Drusilla Burnside* Keziah* (* no ancestral data on these individuals) Tim's paternal ancesters settled in Northwestern Pa and intermarried with families that can be traced back through prominent individuals of colonial America to early European royalty. The Leehan (Liathain) clan originated in Cork, Ireland where they figured prominently in the Annals of Ancient Ireland. (unfortunately, the chain connecting these ancesters with the 19th century emigrants is missing a few centuries of links, but why bother with details. Let it suffice to say that the clan was noble in Munster and brought forth many saints (e.g. St. Liathain, 2nd in Command to St. Columba) and sinners (mention no names). Lehans who remained in Ireland figured prominently in the IRA and were hung for their efforts. In the US, they settled in Pennsylvania, Massachuesetts, and Iowa (and later in Oklahoma and Washington.) I have found Leehans in NJ, including a cop who got his head bashed in the 30s while fighting a labor revolt at a local washing machine factory. Tim's paternal grandmother immigrated from Scotland through Ellis Island. Tim's maternal ancesters settled the Western Reserve lands of Northeastern Ohio and include dunkers, pirates, and pioneers. Each chapter of this book reports the history of the descendents of one of the indicated (<<<) seminal families to (at least) the point where it intersects with the family of another ancester. There is some duplication and s ome available information on generations past the point of intersection has been omitted. The facts and many of the notes in this book have been gathered from many sources that are not properly acknowledged in this written document. The citations are available in my computerized database, but I confess I do not have the discipline to treat them as a proper editor should. My appologies to those hardworking biographers I have treated so poorly. Much of the Leehan chapter was excerpted from a History of the Leehan family wrtten by my Dad, Edmon Leehan, and updated by myself. My father had an interessting way of telling a story, so I left the notes in the first person... I 2 Timothy Donald Leehan's Ancesters and their Descendants hope it entertains more than it confuses the reader. Much is missing. I have not kept current on recent generations. I hope to fix this some day soon. Some questions beg for answers: What ever happened to the families of the 'other Leehans' (i.e. not descendents of Daniel) in the St. Philips' parish? Who was "Mathew's sister, Mrs. B.T.McGuire" mentioned in his obit? Why don't we know more about the parents of Nancy Carberry Leehan? Exactly what was the tie between the Lairds and Ethan Allen (was Susannah Allen a descendent?) Can we learn more about the identities of the Laird Privateers? Why can't we find naturalization papers for Daniel Leehan? The chapter about Royal connections is for history buffs. My existing 13 MB database contains about 25,000 individuals who are members of families whose intermarriages eventually touched the Leehans. This all makes Tim 'kissing cousins' with kngs, quieens, patriots, traitors, and fanatics. The chapters on the Liathans and the Ancient Irish Kings are taken mostly from the Annals of Ireland by theFour Masters. Much of the history from the days before the Romans is probably based on myth, mistunderstanding, and the desire of later monarchs to establish their pedegrees. All of the detail tying the Ui Liathain to the Lehans of Cork is irretrievably lost. it is not only possible but probable that a comparison of Tim's genome or those of one of his decendents to those of other Lehans, Leyhanes, or Lehanes, will soon conclusively prove his descent from Oilil Olum, First King of Munster. The chapter on the Leehan Diaspora sheds some light on the family history in the centuries after the recordings of the Four Masters. It is a history of castle builders, freedom fighters, cops, authors, sociologists, and others. The exercise of identifying traits of nature or nurture is left to the reader. 3 Timothy Donald Leehan's Ancesters and their Descendants Ancestors of Timothy Donald Leehan Cont. p. 10 Cont. p. 9 Cont. p. 8 Cont. p. 7 Cont. p. 6 Cont. p. 5 Matthew Jane John Mary Anderson Arthur D Sarah Giles Franklin Rosa Ann Sprouse Leehan Kingston Carberry Kearney Hill Alberta McCroskey Barnhouse 1835 - 1909 1837 - 1900 1842 - 1890 1854 - 1924 1865 - 1948 1871 - 1961 1861 - 1913 1860 - 1955 John Thomas Nancy Ellen Anderson Smart Walter Fay Ida Bell Gilbert Sigh Gatha C.
