I am sure Year 10 students are revising hard for these exams and wish them the best of luck. Work Experience: Year 10 are to be congratulated on their approach to recent work experience. Feedback from employers has been incredibly positive with many students receiving a 5 ( excellent ) for all categories of employability skills. The main area for development appears to be awareness of dress code which should be a "quick hit " to get right in the future. Students have worked on a variety of tasks in a number of very different settings and some have been offered holiday work or a potential apprenticeship. We thank all our employers for offering students these opportunities. Carnforth High School Marathon: On Monday July 15th, the School Council are organising a marathon event during the school day to raise money for new outdoor seating at school. We are asking for a minimum donation of £1 from all pupils but would be grateful for any money raised and there will be prizes for the form and the pupil who raise the most. Classes will be given a set time to complete their marathon and as it is a ‘Get Fit’ day, they will already be in PE kit. Based on an average class size of 26, each pupil would need to run 1600m (4 laps) to ensure all classes complete a combined marathon. Pupils will be given enough time to walk their part if they wish. Year 10 Geography Trip: On Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th July year 10 GCSE geography students will participate in a fieldtrip to Liverpool to investigate urban regeneration. Students will attend on one of the two days depending on which class they are in. Details are below: 10A2 (Mr Hirst) and 10B2 (Miss Leck) will attend on Monday 15th July. 10A1 (Miss Leck) and 10B1 (Mr Greenwood) will attend Tuesday 16th July. Letters and medical forms have been issued to students. Please ensure students return these forms to Mr Hirst in room GG3 by Monday 8th July. Many students have already paid for the trip using the pre-payment plan set up earlier this academic year. If any money remains outstanding please ensure this is paid by Monday 8th July. The fieldwork will be examined and students who do not attend will be at a major disadvantage when they sit their GCSE examinations. Therefore if there are any concerns or issues regarding attendance on this trip please contact Mr Hirst ([email protected]) to discuss further. Year 9 Blencathra trip (Geography GCSE): On the 11th and 12th July Year 9 students will be participating in their first GCSE fieldtrip to conduct a river study. We are visiting Blencathra in the Lake District and will spend one full day on the river carrying out a range of techniques that the students need to know to complete paper 3. Letters and medical forms have been sent out. Medical forms are due by the 21st of June (an up to date form is required to take them on this form of trip), and payments are due on the 1st July. The fieldwork will be examined and students who do not attend will be at a major disadvantage as it will affect their overall GCSE grade. Therefore if there are any concerns or issues regarding attendance on this trip please contact Miss Leck at [email protected] as soon as possible so we can discuss any problems arising. Maths Support: Research shows that consistent practice can significantly improve student’s mathematical abilities. Mathschase.com is a completely free site where you can quickly test your times tables as well as other basic math skills. These basic building blocks are the foundation on which other skills can develop. If you are looking for a way to support your child at home with their math skills, then mathschase.com is a great way to start. EP research on Adolescent mental health and wellbeing: Being aware of mental health issues is important because it affects every single aspect of daily life for your child. With our drive to create a mentally healthy school we have agreed to be involved in a professional study commissioned by a group of Principal educational psychologists. The research project would like all our present year 9 students to complete an online questionnaire to measure their mental health and well-being. The results of the questionnaire will generate a private report where students will not be identified. Our results will feed into a national report where our school will not be identified. This private report will help us to provide appropriate and timely provision to support our students mental health. Please contact the school if you do not wish for your child to take part in this research project. Sixth Form News: Sixth Form is very quiet now that our Year 13 have completed their studies. We haven't fully lost them all though as our Hairdressers continue to work hard and will do up until the end of the term and we have a few Business Studies students completing coursework. It has meant that our Year 12 students can spread themselves out and enjoy some peace and quiet in the lead up to their work experience week starting on 8th July. This week has seen the Year 11 students hoping to join the sixth form, spend a fun filled day at Morecambe Bay Academy learning about life as a sixth form student and taking part in exciting ice breaker activities and mobile escape rooms. We look forward to seeing them back in September. Some of our year 12 students have also spent a day this week at Lancaster University. Year 12 have completed their mock exams now so we await results shortly to see how they have progressed as they come to the end of their first year. Next week we look forward to our annual fruit picking activity, hoping the nice sunny weather holds up so we can enjoy a small cream tea after picking our goodies. Year 6 Transition: On Wednesday, we welcomed over 120 Year 6 students from a wide range of primary schools to give them their first full day at Carnforth High School. Students took part in a range of lessons as well as some wonderful lunchtime activities. We would like to thank the Year 9 students who acted as guides and mentors throughout the day. We also have an enhanced transition program which allows students who may need a little more support getting used to the change to secondary school time to explore the school and the different systems in place. Thank you to the following Year 8 students who have supported the SEN department with a school treasure hunt this week: Henry Westworth, Lucy James, Ben Carter, Charlie Pearcy, Matthew Askew, Isobel Duncan, Evan Eddleston, Thomas Woolfitt, Isobel Crockett, Lily Crowther and Edward Tyson. PE News: A busy week of sport for both the schools rounders and cricket teams in baking hot sunshine this week. The week began with the Year 7/8 district cricket competition which was hosted by Torrisholme and Westgate cricket clubs. The under 13 boys have worked hard over the last two months to develop their cricket. This was clear to see with four excellent performances from the four games on Monday. The games were played on a reduced format with 8 over innings. The day started with a tricky fixture vs Lancaster Royal Grammar School under 13s B team. LRGS won the toss and selected to bat, Carnforth scored 21/4 with Alfie Hill top scoring with 13 runs. LRGS were much more attacking and reached their target of 22 runs inside 6 overs. Tom Fox was the pick of the bowlers with bowling figures of 2/9. The second game of the day was against Central Lancaster High School. This time Carnforth captain Alfie Hill won the toss and elected to bowl. This proved to be the correct choice by Hill as Central only scored 18/1 from 8 overs. Alfie Hill (11) assisted by Callum Darby and Connor Dyson reached 19 in just 2.2 overs for the first Carnforth victory of the day. The third game was against Morecambe Bay Academy. Morecambe batted first and scored an impressive 45/3. Alfie Stephenson impressed with the ball with bowling figures of 2/6. In response Carnforth could not quite keep up with the run rate and finished 10 runs short on 35/4. A frustrating defeat for a number of reasons but one that the boys will learn from and improve from. The fourth and final game was against Our Ladys Catholic College. OLCC batted first and scored 19/5. Ted Bird took a hat trick with the ball in one over which was a highlight of the day. Jack Finnigan top scored in the reply with an unbeaten 13 runs as Carnforth won the game 20/1. Overall it was an extremely positive day with two victories and two defeats but most importantly the boys continued to learn about the game of cricket.
