Warner Email Address: mtimbrell@berwicksd.org and sarahwarner@berwicksd.org Text and Resource Materials Required Text: Prentice Hall Literature - Grade 10, Penguin Edition Course Description This course gives students a background in the various forms of literature— novel, short story, essay, poetry, and drama. It reviews and continues to expand skills in speech, writing, vocabulary, grammar usage, and literature appreciation. Prerequisites Composition 9 Learning Objectives Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Identify and explain examples of literary terms in various genres of literature. 2. Evaluate and analyze different genres of literature, including, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama and a novel. 3. Identify and explain examples of drama terms found in literature. 4. Interpret relationships among character, setting, plot, theme, tone, style, mood and symbolism. Course Outline Marking Period One: Literary Terms Short Stories Marking Period Two: Fiction/Nonfiction Poetry Marking Period Three: Drama Terms Dramatic Literature the components of such literature. Marking Period Four: Novel and the components of such literature. ***Grammar, writing and vocabulary will be emphasized throughout the school year. Classroom Procedures 1. RESPECT IS ESSENTIAL! Students are expected to respect the property of others, as well as themselves, peers, teachers, and para educators and any guest who enters the classroom. Respect during classroom activities include, actively attending and participating, using appropriate language, following directions, raising a hand to speak, and listening while others are talking. 2. CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR – students are expected to be on time to class, be responsible by bringing materials to class including a writing utensil, and participate actively in classroom activities. 3. HOMEWORK – may be assigned occasionally throughout the school year and is expected to be completed as part of the students’ grade. 4. MAKE UP WORK – students are responsible to request work that has been missed due to absence from the classroom. Missed assignments and assessments should be made up in accordance with the policy as it is outlined in the student handbook. Assessments Assessments may include the following, but are not limited to: written and/or oral quizzes, tests, homework, writing and discussion assignments, as well as projects. Grading Policy Grading is on a “total point” system. Tests, quizzes, projects, classroom and homework assignments will each be assigned a point value. The final exam will be weighted according to school policy. The independent reading assignment will count for 10% of each marking period’s grade. .
