Temperature ,humidity , and and light were monitored. Snakes were 凶 pped ,injected with PIT tags , and released. A to 凶 of of 235 individuals were marked and the population was estimated to range from 406 to 567. Snakes Snakes were also collected by hand in conjunction with a unique local fishing technique. Radioteleme 町 observations on eleven snakes demonstrated 血at they prefer 血e mud-root tangle tangle along 白巴 edges of the ditches and klongs. Body temperatures ranged from 29.2 to 32 .1・ C , with no differences between the sexes. Radio transmitters were also implanted in small small numbers of Enhydris plumbea , Homalopsis buccata , Xenochrophis piscator ,組 d Cylindrophis Cylindrophis ruffus. Observations were made on litter size ,diet , and predation. An appendix lists lists all snake species encountered in the area. 問 TRODUC 百 ON Lake Songkhla ,a 98 ,OOO-hectare wetland complex in southem Thailand , is composed of three shallow basins. Th e lake has formed over 白e past 150 ye 紅 s as a series of barrier islands islands gradually enclosed the basins. The islands ,which now form the Sathing-Phra Peninsula ,almost completely isolate Lake Songkhla from the Gulf of Thailand; there is only one opening to 血e sea located at the south end of the lake ne 紅 the city of Song 凶 la. Gradually the lake has continued to accumulate silt and today the three basins basins have a mean depth of 1.2 m and a maximum depth of 2 .4 m (LEELA W A THANAGOON ET A L., 1997). The wetlands of Lake Songkhla are one of Thailand's unique and important natural resources resources and the lake is of regional significance as a stopover for many species of migratory birds. birds. A recent study of the fishes of Lake Songkhla (LHEKNIM , 1998) demonstrates that the the basins of this lake and the nearby freshwater Thale Noi serve as a reservoir of marine and and freshwater species diversity. Thus ,it is not su 叩rising that this vast wetland complex provides provides an ideal location to study aquatic snakes. Lake Songkhla is home to perhaps the most diverse assemblage of aquatic snakes in the the world. One true sea snake (Hydrophis brooldi ,Hydrophiidae) , one aquatic file snake (Acrochordus (Acrochordus granulatus ,Acrochordidae) , one pipe snake (Cylindrophis rl{ 伊lS ,Uropeltidae) and and at least four species of Asian water snakes (Homalopsinae ,Colubridae) live in the lake or or along its wet edges. Our focus has been on the small- to medium-sized species of Asian water water snakes that are rarely more than one meter in total length. These snakes are characteriied characteriied by small dorsally oriented eyes ,crescent-shaped valvular nostrils , enlarged rear rear fangs and mild venom. The 32 species of Homalopsinae are grouped into 10 genera and found westward to Pakistan's Pakistan's Indus Valley eastward to China and southward to New Guinea and Australia. The homalopsine snake Cerberus rynchops may be the most abundant snake on the plane t. For example , as many as three dog faced water snakes occupies every meter of shoreline shoreline at the mouth of the Muar River in Malaysia (J A YNE ET AL , 1988) and it appears to to occur in similar densities throughout much of its range from India to northem Australia. Half Half of the 32 species of homalopsine snakes inhabit the waters of Indochina and 8 of of these species are restricted to this region. Thailand has a particularly high diversity , with with 12 species in its wetlands. This peak diversity suggests that this region is the likely center center of distribution and probable site of origin and evolutionary radiation for 出is group of of water snakes. While the anatomy ,taxonomy and overall geographic distribution of the Asian water snakes snakes has been studied at some length (e.g. ,SMITH , 1943; GYI , 1970; Mu 即 HY & VORIS , 1994a) their natural history remains largely anecdotal (MURPHY & Vo 町 S, 1994b). Until Until recently the specifics of habitat use , thermal biology , food and feeding behavior , reproductive reproductive cycles , and population biology were virtually unknown. The ecology of Asian Asian water snakes is of particular interest because members of the subfamily are at different different stages of transition between terrestrial and aquatic life zones. For example , the plumbeous water snake (Enhydris plumbea) is one of the more terrestrial of the group and although although it is usually found in paddy fields ,buffalo wallows ,marshes ,ditches , and small streams ,it sometimes can be found on dry land several meters from standing water (KA. RNS ET A L., 1996 and VORIS & KA. RNS , 1996). On the other hand , the keel-bellied water water snake (Bitia hydroides) may be the most aquatic as it rarely ,if ever , leaves shallow or or intertidal marine habitats (JA YNE ,ET A L., 1995). THE ECOLOGY OF THE WATER SNAKES OF BAN THA HIN ,SONGKHLA 131 METHODS Study Site Th esωdy site (日 gure 1) is located about 0.2 km west of Ban Th a Hin ,at 血eB 姐 Tha Hin Royal Fores 住y Substation (7.23'N ,100.26'E) , Thale Sap Non-hunting area ,on the southeast southeast side of Lake Songkhla's Thale Sap. The study site is approximately 20 ha. The major major habitat at the study site is extensive wet meadow dominated by a single species of grass ,Paspalum distichum L. (Gramineae) ,a salt-tolerant , cosmopolitan species. At B 佃 Tha Hin P. distichum attains a height of from 0.5 to 0.75 m and is emergent in areas 白紙 紅 e continually inundated with water at lake level (Figure 2).
