The “Panhollow” Dispersal Sale

The “Panhollow” Dispersal Sale Of 500 Pedigree Holstein Friesians On behalf of Rodney, Jean & Paul Allin MONDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER 2020 9.45am HOLSWORTHY MARKET New Market Road, Holsworthy, Devon, EX22 7FA The “Panhollow” Dispersal Sale of 500 Pedigree Holstein Friesians on behalf of Rodney, Jean & Paul Allin Hollow Panson, St Giles On The Heath, Launceaston (removed to Holsworthy Livestock Market for convenience of sale) Comprising: 365 In Milk and/or In Calf Cows & Heifers, and 130 “A” lot Heifer Calves to follow their dams. Monday 14th September 2020 9.45am at HOLSWORTHY MARKET New Market Road, Holsworthy, Devon, EX22 7FA FOREWORD On behalf of Kivells we would like to thank Rodney, Jean and Paul Allin for their kind instructions to disperse their ‘Panhollow’ herd of 500 Pedigree Holstein Friesian dairy cattle at Holsworthy Market on Monday 14th September at Holsworthy Market. The sale of 500 head of Dairy Cattle will be the largest one day sale to have occurred in Devon and Cornwall for some considerable time. Quantity and quality combines to provide this wonderful selection from one holding. When Rodney left school the farm carried 50 cows and followers, 300 sheep, with 140 acres of cereals. For Rodney’s 21st birthday he was given a pedigree heifer calf and over the next few years the existing herd was graded up and a few pedigree animals were purchased. The herd expanded with quality breeding and is entirely homebred. In 1999 the opportunity to acquire the farm from Emma, Col. Molesworth St. Aubyn’s daughter, and the Tetcott Estate arose. Rodney and Jean’s son, Paul, joined the business having completed three years at Bicton College and the family commenced the expansion of the dairy herd. The neighbouring Martin family of East Panson ceased milking and started rearing heifers for the Panhollow herd and this allowed the farmed acreage to expand. The family have been dedicated dairy farmers and have been most successful in their aim of breeding a uniform type of cow which has good capacity without being too large. The herd comprises strong and robust cows comfortably capable of producing 8000 to 9000 litres of milk with high butterfats and good fertility without being pushed. From viewing the herd the Allin family have achieved their aim. These cows are naturally milky whilst retaining good condition with chest width, udder conformation and excellent legs and feet. The breeding for butterfat has obviously worked and in recent years use of the Genus computer sire mating system has worked extremely well. The cows are not pushed at Hollow Panson but milk naturally within themselves and have the flexibility to adapt to both a higher input or a grazing based system due to their excellent type. The dairy cattle are farmed on a commercial basis, fed a basic grass TMR with Out of Parlour feeders. No cake is fed in the parlour. The herd are all year round calving, herringbone parlour milked and cubicle housed. The herd are QMMS recorded (having ceased NMR recording a couple of years ago). The rolling annual herd average is 8,500Kgs 4.25%BF 3.29%P cc170 Calving Pattern The sale includes the following all year calving pattern May-June (63), July-August (63), October-December (89), January-February (55) & March-April (50). Herd Health The herd is Lepto, BVD and IBR vaccinated, and BVD tagged with the herd recently achieving BVD free status. The herd is Johnes monitored and there are no positive cows in the sale. The cows are foot bathed twice a day with no known cases of Digital Dermatitis. All dry cows that calve in September and October have received a Rotovac injection with all dry cows being fluked and wormed at drying off. Auctioneers Comment This sale offers a fantastic opportunity for all dairy farmers looking to increase their Autumn production and purchase cows that demonstrate excellent traits with high butterfats. The sale starts at 9.45 a.m. and will provide a unique opportunity to acquire homebred pedigree dairy cattle from one source. Harpers Feeds It is with personal sadness I write this forward after the difficult decision to cease milk production at Hollow Panson has been made. I have had the greatest of pleasure of working closely with Rodney, Paul and Jean over the past few years. This is truly the MOST genuine herd of tough cows I work with. The herd’s ability to produce good quality milk to these performance levels is testament to the years of breeding and careful selection of bulls. The system runs with grass at its heart either by zero grazing or made into silage. The addition of straights to create the base ration is then complemented with concentrate through the out of parlour feeders. This herd is by no means pushed and will go away and delight their new owners with just how honest and hard-working they are. Ahead of the sale I will be delighted to take calls from anyone wishing to know more about the cows but reassured you will be buying with confidence. I would like to thank Rodney, Paul and Jean on behalf of Harpers for their loyal custom and support over the past years and wish them every happiness in the next chapter of their life.
