Hailed as a founder of modern comparative theology, Jesuit Fr. Francis Xavier Clooney received the 2017 John Courtney Murray Award for distinguished theological achievement from the Catholic Theological Society of America at its annual convention in Albuquerque. The choice of Clooney reflects “hope that growth in the depth of our understanding of both the Christian tradition and the reality of God remain possible in our day,” said Jesuit Fr. David Hollenbach, president of the society, adding that Clooney’s work is “profoundly traditional and creatively original” and has “made contributions to both interreligious understanding and Christian theology.” An expert in Hinduism and religions of South Asia, Clooney was inspired by a decision to teach in Kathmandu, Nepal, after his own college graduation and entrance into the Society of Jesus. In his remarks, Clooney emphasized the importance of “looking out into a larger world” from the Catholic tradition. “I had to find a way to be a Catholic theologian and take seriously this vast other world of Hinduism,” he said. “There was no immediate way of doing this...I’ve had to invent the field to do the work I wanted to do.” Join us in congratulating Fr. Clooney for this well deserved award. The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ Sunday Sharon, MA Our Lady of Sorrows Parish From Senior Deacon Mike: The church celebrates the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. Recall the excerpt from chapter 8 of the Book of Deuteronomy. Moses said to the people: "Remember how for forty years now the LORD, your God, has directed all your journeying in the desert, so as to test you by affliction and find out whether or not it was your intention to keep his commandments. He therefore let you be afflicted with hunger, and then fed you with manna, a food unknown to you and your fathers, in order to show you that not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD. Last Sunday’s Car Wash ~ Great Success!!! Thank you to all who helped make this year’s Car Wash Fundraiser for our parish Summer Mission Trips possible! We raised over $1600.00 and washed approximately 50 or more cars in 5 hours. These funds will go towards defraying the costs of each of our Summer Mission Trips being held in July. Middle School students will head to Springfield, Massachusetts to work with the Just5Days program and High Schoolers will head to Worcester, Massachusetts to work with the Young Neighbors in Action program. Each of these programs serves underprivileged communities through hands-on ser- vice and social interaction. Each year, Our Lady of Sorrows offers the Just5Dyas and Young Neighbors in Action op- portunities to our Middle and High School students as a sleep-away summer service option, which lasts 5-7 days. Participants can expect to explore the communities they will be serving, participating in service projects such as serving as volunteers at a childcare center or children’s summer camp, serving food at or socializing with guests at a local soup kitchen or shelter, or providing hands-on help by painting, fixing or building homes in an under- served community. Participants are exposed to the world through the eyes of a servant of Christ and are encour- aged to use their God given talents to help those in need.
