Certainly for most of us, the past year and a half has had its challenges, to say the least. What I have re-learned over the past year and a half, and to coin a well-known phrase, is that it is important that we “don’t sweat the little things”. It is easy these days to get bogged down in the details. To get stressed-out over minor things that in most cases we have little or no control over. “Control the things you can control” my dad used to say to me. Focus on what you can control and what is important for you to live a healthy and fulfilled life. Stress is the enemy. Its negative effects on the human mind and body, over time, are too numerous for me to list in this short message. Managing stress is an important factor in human health and happiness. There are many ways to manage your daily stress load. Most of us know that regular exercise is key to managing stress. Eating well and things like meditation, yoga or reading a good book can also assist your mind and body to manage stress. Forest bathing, gardening, hiking, snowshoeing and skiing are other good healthy options. Just being outdoors in nature can also lower stress. The 2021/22 Fall-Winter Community Guide provides lots of options in terms of healthy living. Recreation by its very nature (no pun intended) is about replenishing your mind, body and soul so that you can tackle the daily stressors in your life before they tackle you. You may have already tried a new recreational activity or two during the pandemic. Congratulations if you have! Stay with it. Your mind and body will thank you. If you are unsure where to start, give Community Services a call. Our recreation professionals would be more than happy to assist you.
