The walk starts at (A) the bus terminus in Castleton (on bus route 272) GR { SK153830. Walk along the road towards the centre of Castleton. The road turns sharply to the left and then bears right. Do not bear right but continue up the hill past The Nag's Head. You may see Peveril Castle above the houses ahead. 1 2. You pass a grass triangle on the right, the Market Square, and the road bends left. On the left, look for the sign to Cave Dale on the road { SK151827 and turn into the rather dark lane between cottages to the entrance to the dale. You are now on the Limestone Way. 3. Walk up the dale. The footpath may be a stream and, as the rock is limestone, it can be slippery so take due care. Enjoy the rock formations as you go up the dale. 4. As you reach the top of the dale there are waymarks for the Limestone Way. Stay on the path with the wall on your right until you reach a gate in the wall ahead. 5. Go through the gate and the next gate from where you will see a sign post. 2 6. Bear left at the sign post and follow the track up the hill. The track leads to a walled area with a gate at either end. Go through the two gates. Cross the track after the second gate and continue though the gate on the other side. This gate is waymarked for the Limestone Way. This is (B), GR { SK135813. 7. Follow the reasonably clear track uphill. There is a signpost at the top right of the field ahead. Do not take the footpath to the right but stay to the left of the wall. The path passes a pond on the left before going through another gate. There are good views. The path passes a small quarry on the left and then goes through another gate. 8. The path now goes downhill between two walls. Go through the gate at the bottom and then look for the gate onto the road ahead to the left of the house. Go through this gate. 3 9. Walk down the road until it bears right. There is a footpath sign here that shows the Limestone Way continuing ahead. Our route leaves this here and follows the sign to the left, through a gate and over a stile. This is (C), GR { SK127794. 10. Take care at this point. The footpath does not follow the obvious track ahead but goes through a gate in the wall on the left, across a bit of a dell. Go through this gate, cross the field aiming for a gap in the wall ahead. Then head to to the top right corner of the field where there is a stile. The path on the ground is very faint here. 11. Continue in the same direction you have been walking, aiming for some trees visible ahead. Cross over a stile in the wall { stone on the side you are coming from and wood on the other side. 4 Follow the slightly clearer track to the gate to the right of the two left-hand trees. Go through this gate. 12. You are now on rougher ground with small hillocks. This is the result of old mine workings. The path winds its way through the hillocks, never far from the left hand wall. The path comes to a gate onto more open moorland. 13. Follow the reasonably clear track towards a rocky hillock ahead (the top of an old mineshaft) and then bear slightly right. There is a fenced enclosure ahead. Leave this on your left and go through the gate ahead. 14. The track is now clearer. There is a quarry on your left and some industrial debris. Follow the track onto the road. 5 15. This is (D), GR { SK150802 and is Batham Gate, a Roman road. Turn left onto the road. Keep an eye out for a footpath sign on the right. Cross the stile here and follow the clear path as it goes alongside the road. 16. At (E), GR { SK155806, bear right to go down Green Dale. The footpath is not very clear at first but the telegraph poles are on it. 17. Go through the gate at the bottom of the dale. Emerge onto a road at (F), GR { SK160806, turn right and then at the junction left in order to follow the sign for Bradwell. There are good views from the road. 18. Follow the road steadily downhill into Bradwell. When you reach the main road turn left and walk down to the bus stop at (G), GR { SK173813. 6.
