Antenna Design For Improved Read Range RFID By: Justin Edayadiyil | Supervisor: Prof. John Batchelor Introduction Results An RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system consists of a low-cost tag, a reader, and a host. It is used for wirelessly identifying objects. When the tags are placed on people, for instance as a temporary tattoo, the communication range (read range) between the tag and the reader decreases rapidly. The aim of the project was to produce an RFID tag antenna using collinear array to increase the read range. The antenna was designed on CST and it operates at 868 MHz. The absolute gain shows a gain of 4.81dBi. The antenna gain produced by the antenna is higher than the existing collinear arrays. System Description RFID tag antenna was constructed using a printed dipole collinear antenna array. The proposed antenna array consists of 5 half-wave printed sleeve dipole antennas with an optimised Antenna & Antenna Array Feed Line & microstrip feedline and a tuning pad. The tuning Reflector Tuning Pad pad is used to achieve a better match at the operating frequency. The antenna array was Press Release printed on a double-sided low-cost FR-4 substrate. This research project investigates collinear The substrate had a thickness of 0.6 mm and The radiation emitted from this antenna array arrays and uses it to produce an RFID tag relative permittivity Er = 4.4. produces an antenna gain of 8.52dBi. The antenna to resolve issues with RFID read rage. A reflector was also implemented into this design, directivity produced is high as a horn antenna. By producing an antenna array operating at to achieve a high antenna gain and produce a 868MHz, with a high antenna gain of 4.81dBi very directive radiation pattern. By having a With a high antenna gain and a directive radiation and a high directivity of 8.52dBi, the read range directive radiation pattern, the communication pattern, the read range can be achieved. between tag and the reader can be increased. between the reader and the tag can be increased..
