Figworts in Edinburgh / Lothians These are the four figworts in Edinburgh; the first on its own cannot be confused with the others, being very hairy with yellow flowers, the other three follow shown in parallel. At the close the others from further afield are mentioned. Yellow Figwort Scrophularia vernalis - Stems and leaf undersides very hairy. Very occasional. Common, Green and Water Figworts Common (=Knotted) Figwort Green Figwort Water Figwort Scrophularia nodosa Scrophularia umbrosa Scrophularia auriculata Widespread (not the Pentlands) Occasional, near water Near Water Plant Common Green Water Staminodes Simple + Wider than Well-Divided long, indented Rounded Leaves Rather Base often Bases often taper triangular- recesses shaped leaf Blunt or sharp teeth Blunt teeth Sharp teeth generally Tongue-like leaves Sharp teeth Little leaflets often at leaf bases (away from the stem) Common Green Water Stem Shape Look for the wings to the stem edges, and run your fingers round. Square Slightly (all 3) winged Extremely winged Strong edges Others Elsewhere Balm-Leaved Figwort - Hairy leaves, stems and calyx lobes, pedicels mostly >3x calyx, but purplish flowers. (Mostly Devon/Cornwall and some very southerly coastal spots, and v rare in Dundee) - Scrophularia scorodonia Italian Figwort - As Balm-Leaved but unhairy calyx lobes, pedicels mostly <3x calyx.
