Currently the National Mall has no closed-circuit surveillance system, and video coverage is necessary for the safety and security of the National Mall area. The goal of the project is to install a temporary video surveillance system for a period not to exceed five (5) years on the National Mall to provide visitor and staff safety, along with the protection of park resources. The project includes eight cameras attached to new non-light poles installed on the edge of the tree panels opposite the center panels, centered between existing Olmsted light standards, between 3rd and 14th Streets.
