AP Latin: Summer Work 2020 1. Watch this video on the career of Julius Caesar. It helps to put the Gallic Wars in ​ ​ ​ ​ context. Take notes if you feel like this would be helpful to remember the material or to use as a reference later. 2. Do a little translating! We’ll be starting with Caesar in the fall. I can’t get you books, but there’s a nice on-line commentary here. Please write out a translation of Book I, ​ ​ sections 1-4 (ending at consiverit). The linked commentary also has a list of common ​ ​ vocab words found in Caesar. 3. Become familiar with some of the names of tribes and geographical locations in Gaul by locating them on a map. This map is really good and shows many of the places that ​ ​ will come up in our reading in the fall. The second page of this assignment sheet gives a list of terms to know. These will be on your first assessment in the fall. 4. IF YOU CAN, read an English translation of the Aeneid and take notes for yourself. If ​ ​ ​ ​ all goes normally, we’ll start Virgil in December. The AP syllabus covers only portions of the work, but it would be incredibly helpful for you to have read the entire work closely and carefully to get an idea of how the syllabus sections fit together. It’s also just a good read. There are lots of translations of the Aeneid from which to choose. Some names ​ ​ you might search for are: Robert Fitzgerald, Allen Mandelbaum, Stanley Lombardo, or Robert Fagles.
