July 18, 2021 So Great a Cloud of Witnesses St. Camillus de Lellis (d. 1614) Born in the Abruzzo region of Naples, Camillus was a soldier as a young man, afflicted with an addiction to gambling, a violent temper, and reckless ways. He suffered a wound to his leg that persisted the rest of his life but that also set him on a different path. Penniless at age twenty-four, he was moved to conversion after a sermon by and conversation with a Franciscan. He tried three times without success to enter the Capuchin novitiate but was denied because of his diseased leg. He was admitted for care to the hospital for incurables in Rome, where he met St. Philip Neri, his future confessor. With no means to pay for his hospital treatment, Camillus began to minister to the sick and dying. He was eventually put in charge because of skill and zeal, bringing every possible peace to the dying while angels of God spoke into the ears spiritual and bodily aid to the ill. He studied with the Jesuits of the Camillians the words they were to offer. Though sick and was finally ordained a priest at age thirty-four. He himself, Camillus continued to minister to patients, started the religious order Ministers of the Infirm, later crawling from bed to bed when he could no longer stand or known as the Camillians, whose members wear a black walk. He had established eight hospitals and fifteen cassock with a red cross—to “frighten the devil,” Camillus communities of brothers and priests by the time he died at is reputed to have said. He desired to serve the sick out of age sixty-four. He is buried at the Church of St. Mary love at a time when not many wanted to be in contact with Magdalene in Rome, which the order still maintains. He is the ill, and criminals were often employed to give them patron saint of hospitals, nurses, and the sick. His feast day basic care. His love for the sick was displayed most when is July 18 on the Traditional Calendar. epidemic and famine consumed Rome, and when the plague “Brother, if you commit a sin and take pleasure in it, seized the city of Nola. The Camillians’ vows included the pleasure passes but the sin remains. But if you do poverty, chastity, obedience, as well as serving the sick something virtuous even though you are tired, the tiredness without fail, even if risking their own lives. They became passes but the virtue remains.” known as the Fathers and Brothers of a Happy Death, because of the comfort they brought to the dying. St. Philip “Think well. Speak well. Do well. These three things, Neri said he saw on many occasions Camillians speaking through the mercy of God, will make a man go to Heaven.” O F D T W St. Apollinaris of Ravenna (d. 79), Tuesday July 20 (July 23, Traditional Calendar): We therefore grossly deceive ourselves in not allotting more time to the study of divine truths. It is not enough barely to believe them, and let our thoughts now and then glance upon them: that knowledge which shows us heaven, will not bring us to the possession of it, and will deserve punishments, not rewards, if it remain slight, weak, and superficial. For this all the saints affected solitude and retreats from the noise and hurry of the world, as much as their circumstances allowed them. St. Lawrence of Brindisi (d. 1619), Wednesday July 21: Christ is the first-born of every creature, and the whole of humanity as well as the created world finds its foundation and meaning in Him. Moreover, this would have been the case even if Adam had not sinned. St. Mary Magdalene (d. first century), Thursday July 22: I have seen the Lord. St. Bridget of Sweden (d. 1373) Friday July 23: Let everyone who has the grace of intelligence fear that, because of it, he will be judged more heavily if he is negligent. Let him who has no intelligence or talent rejoice and do as much as he can with the little that he has; for he has been freed from many occasions of sin. St. Charbel Makhlouf (d.1898), Saturday July 24: The war of the evil one against the family is the core of his war against the Lord. Guard your families and keep them from the schemes of the evil one through the presence of God in them. 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Traditional Latin: Eighth Sunday after Pentecost MASS INTENTIONS Mon (19) 6 am Dean Guidry Tue (20) 6 am List of the Deceased Wed (21) 6 am St. Agnes clergy & staff, ad int.
