This Week We Are Continuing Our Journey Through Prehistory and Entering the Iron Age

This week we are continuing our journey through prehistory and entering the Iron Age. The Iron Age followed the Bronze Age and will take us the end of the period known as ‘pre- history’. In Britain, it lasted for around 800 years and was ended by the conquest of much of Britain by the Romans. Watch the linked video to find out more about what made the Iron Age so special. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6rCMTOss_k Iron – it changed the world! Bronze Age people had taken the weapons and tools of their Stone Age ancestors and significantly improved them through discovering that Bronze could be mined and used. As the names suggest the people of the Iron Age discovered how to extract and use Iron. Iron is tougher than bronze and so was more versatile. Iron is shaped by being heated to a high temperature and then hammering it against an anvil. This process is known as ‘smithing’. Watch this short video clip to find out more about how Iron was extracted from (taken out of) the rocks. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks2-discovering-iron-in-iron-age-britain/zn3hf4j Iron Age people - The courageous Celts! The people living in Europe during the Iron Age are known as Celts. This culture continues to live on today within music and language.
