Title: John Twiggs papers Dates: 1781-1812 Extent: 0.25 cubic feet (3 folders) Identification: MS 0810 Biographical/Historical Note John Twiggs (1750-1816) moved to Georgia from Maryland. He was a Revolutionary War soldier and a Major-General of the Georgia Militia. In 1783 he brokered a treaty commission in Augusta for the State of Georgia with the Creek Nation in order to obtain new land. Scope and Content Note This collection consists of an order book (including a typed index of names), 1792-1812, correspondence, and other papers. Many of the papers concern the Georgia Militia, Native American fighting and the political situation in Georgia. Correspondents include Samuel Stirk, Nathanael Greene, Thomas Galphin, John Habersham, John Watts, George Handley, Joel Meriwether, John Appling, Edward Telfair, Jared Irwin, William Glascock, George Mathews, J. Evans Lunt, James McNeel, Jonas Fauche, John McKenzie, and John Car Smith. Many of these letters are photocopies.
