UNC, Duke & NC State Golf Field Trip Chapel Hill, North Carolina May 15 – 18, 2017 General Event Information: The Carolina Seniors Golf Association’s May event will be held in The Triangle, a region in North Carolina anchored by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University in Durham and North Carolina State University in Raleigh. The "Triangle" name was cemented in the public consciousness in 1959 with the creation of Research Triangle Park, home to numerous high-tech companies & businesses. Although the name is now used to refer to the geographic region, "the Triangle" originally referred to the universities, whose research facilities, and the educated workforce they provide, have historically served as a major attraction for businesses located in the region. So you may be thinking why should this be a venue for the CSGA? The answers are numerous but one of the best is: THE GOLF! The three anchor universities (UNC Chapel Hill, Duke and NC State) each have their own course, UNC Finley GC, Duke University GC and Lonnie Poole GC. These courses are among the finest in the state and for that matter the finest University Courses in the Country. UNC Finley Golf Course was redesigned by Tom Fazio in 1999 and he described it as some of his best work. The course features Bent and Bermuda grass fairways and rough and is always among the best conditioned courses in the area. There are a few holes in which water comes into play but do not expect to lose a dozen balls on this course. Much like many Fazio designs, you do not need to be dead straight out of the tee box to enjoy the course and that certainly suits my game! The greens can be tricky but overall the course will not disappoint. The beautiful 18-hole championship Duke University Golf Club opened in 1957 and is the only Robert Trent Jones- designed course in the region. Redesigned by Jones’ son Rees in 1994, the Duke University Golf Club is considered one of the top ten golf courses in North Carolina. The course has also received top rankings from Golf Digest, GolfWeek, Golf Magazine, and was recently voted as the best public course in the Triangle by the Triangle Business Journal. Lonnie Poole Golf Course serves as the home for the men's and women's golf teams of North Carolina State University. The course provides one of the toughest challenges in the Triangle, when playing 6,901 yards from the black tees, though shorter tee sets will allow our CSGA members to enjoy a more pleasurable golf experience. This beautiful course represents the evolution in golf course architecture towards sustainability; a golf course that fits into and protects the natural environment. An Audubon-certified course, it is possibly the most eco-friendly of Triangle courses and has as many natural areas as you'll find anywhere. You can always expect excellent conditioning and lush terrain. The Sheraton Chapel Hill was selected as our host hotel for this event because it met all of our search criteria. It is centrally located; about 4 miles from the UNC Finley Golf Course and 5 miles from Duke University Golf Club. The 3.5 star Sheraton Chapel Hill has 168 clean comfortable rooms, numerous banquet rooms for our receptions and dinners and serves a fine buffet breakfast each morning. Registration No. ST-34491 Course Descriptions: UNC Finley Golf Course: UNC Finley is one of the most enjoyable courses you will ever play. Course designer Tom Fazio has created a layout that, from the proper tees, will provide a positive experience to anyone from a touring pro to a high handicapper. The 18-hole course features five tee boxes that challenge every level golfer. Its 7,328 yards of golf from the Tar Heel Tees and 5,017 yards from the red tees gives the course versatility. The Par 72 has a memorable layout, practice facility and Grill. The original golf course, located just to the southeast of campus, opened in 1949. It was designed by George Cobb and funded by Raleigh businessman A.E. Finley, who owned and operated one of the largest equipment dealerships in the United States. It served the University and town of Chapel Hill well for nearly half a century but needed an extensive overhaul. The decision was made to hire Fazio, one of the modern game’s foremost golf designers and a resident of Hendersonville, to start from scratch on the site and build an entirely new course. UNC Finley opened in 1999 and became Fazio’s 11th course designed in the state he’d called home since the late 1980s. It’s one he’d put against anything else he’d done in North Carolina. “If a person could see only one of those 11 courses as a measure of what our company can do, I’d be proud for Finley to be that one,” Fazio said upon the course’s opening. “I’d be very proud to say it’s as good as we can do.” Duke University Golf Course: Duke University Golf Club first opened for play in 1957. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. The course was renovated in 1994 by his oldest son, Rees Jones. The Duke University Golf Club Golf Course was built on rolling terrain and features fast greens and narrow fairways. Towering pine trees line all the fairways, and meandering streams come into play on a few holes. One of the key features to this course is the sharp changes in elevation, so expect some interesting lies. In addition, many strategically-placed bunkers guard the fairways and greens, and water hazards come into play on eight holes. Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 7,045 yards.
