April 4, 2021 Saint Michael the Archangel Parish FATHER BRIAN’S DESK Easter Sunday of the Resurrecon of the Lord Together with Fathers Ben and Tom, I wish to greet every single parishioner in the joy of Christ’s Resurrecon from the dead, “Blessed Easter! The Lord is Risen Indeed!” This is the annual liturgical culminaon of every- thing that Catholic Chrisans celebrate and believe in at each Sunday Holy Mass, and the crown of our liturgi- cal year. It is a true Passover that we celebrate: freedom from the slavery of sin to sharing in the divine life of Jesus Christ. That is why this feast is o en called Pascha, in both the ancient languages of Lan and Greek, which simply means, “Passover,” and is the root of the name of “Easter,” in many other languages. In Rome during the Sunday Mass on the Feast of the Resurrecon, an ancient papal rite takes place which is quite beauful: an ancient Roman icon of the Lord Jesus is opened by the Holy Father so that all in the square may behold it while the cantors chant a verse from the Gospel of Saint Luke, Chapter 24, verse 34, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon”! It is a rite that I witnessed many mes while living in Rome. It always struck me as so poignant in that these words affirm that our faith has been passed down one genera- on a er the next by the gi and power of the Holy Spirit, from the original witnesses of the Lord’s Resurrec- on. And it is a precious gi ! The biblical verse of St. Luke the Evangelist, chapter 24, verse 34, along with the scriptural appearances of Our Divine Lord in His resurrected body, confirms our Catholic faith today as we cel- ebrate the Lord’s Resurrecon in the hope of our own resurrecon to eternal life in the body. One day, we pray, we shall behold the Lord Jesus, with our own body! As priests of the parish, it is our hope that with the eventual slowing down and end to the pandemic, all of the faithful of our parish return together, as the body of Christ, in common worship in Church, as we celebrate a “lile Easter,” on each and every Sunday of the year. May the Lord hasten this desire! Let us be so thankful for the gi of the Lord’s passion, death and resurrecon, the first statement of faith preached by the apostles, which we receive and hand on to our families today. May the worthy recepon of Christ’s Body and Blood, during this Paschal Season, not only make firm our belief, but also allow us to share in the Divinity of Christ and be transformed saints of the Lord. Blessed and Happy Easter to all!
