The opportunity to represent your country is a great honour at any time, however, being provided with the opportunity to also qualify for a World Cup will be a memory you will cherish for the rest of your lives. This year’s event will see the Under 19 national squads from six of Europe’s Associate Members - Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Jersey and Guernsey playing against each other in a series of 50-over matches. Ireland will be looking to once again defend their title from top rivals Scotland and Netherlands. The ICC is dedicated to providing a pathway for Member countries to compete at the highest level of our sport and therefore the top two teams at the end of this event will progress through to the Global ICC U/19 CWC Qualifier next year. On behalf of the Pepsi ICC Development Programme, I wish you and your team the best of luck in achieving this aim. There are many people who have contributed much to the organisation of this event, not least Cricket Ireland and their Tournament Organiser Richard Johnson to whom I and the ICC are truly grateful. In addition, we are very grateful to the following personnel for their involvement: Tournament Referee Richard O’Sullivan, the match officials – umpires, scorers and web managers; groundsmen ; match managers; and many other volunteers who have made all this possible. Good luck to all those involved and enjoy the cricket! Yours sincerely Richard Holdsworth ICC Regional Development Manager - Europe 3 Tournament Welcome Tournament Organiser, Richard Johnson Writes: During the past five years the NCU area will have staged five Youth Tournaments on behalf of the International Cricket Council – namely the ICC European Under-19 Championships 2006, the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier 2007, the ICC European Under-17 Championships 2008 and 2009 and now the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier 2010. These tournaments could not be run without the support of the public bodies, the clubs themselves, and, of course, the various members of the organising committees who have given their time so freely over this period. I want to extend particular thanks to the host clubs and their club managers for agreeing to host these fixtures, without their support it would not be possible to run these Youth Tournaments. Ten of the fourteen grounds being used this week hosted matches in last year‟s European Under-17 Championships and I am grateful for the continued support from Bangor Cricket Club, (ever present since 2002), the Northern Ireland Civil Service Sports Association, Downpatrick Cricket Club, Holywood Cricket Club, the two Shaw‟s Bridge grounds, Carrickfergus Cricket Club, Derriaghy Cricket Club, Laurelvale Cricket Club and Waringstown Cricket Club. I am also delighted that CIYMS Cricket Club return for the first time since 2008, whilst further back, Lisburn Cricket Club and Lurgan Cricket Club are hosting matches for the first time since the ICC Trophy in 2005. Ballymena Cricket Club returns after having hosted representative matches in the 1990‟s. As I stated last year this indicates all the hard work incurred by the NCU Grounds Convenor, Neil Hunter and his committee. Many thanks are due to Philip Hudson, Mary Godbeer, Richard O‟Sullivan, Richard Holdsworth and all the staff in the ICC Europe Office at Lords and also to Murray Power, Bryan Milford and Wylie McKinty for their advice and help over the past five months. This is the second successive Youth Tournament that I have organised which has encompassed fourteen grounds and I am confident that, with the help of the Club Managers, Jason McCullough and Wylie McKinty, it will be a successful tournament. Since the commencement of the ICC Development Programme in 1997 there have been seven Under-19 World Cups and Ireland has qualified six times, Scotland four times, Netherlands twice and Denmark once, back in 1998. This year these four countries will be joined, for the first time, by Guernsey and Jersey, all hoping to join the full member countries in two years time. The planning is now over and I hope that the players and officials enjoy the tournament and that they will leave with happy cricketing memories of their stay in Northern Ireland. 4 President of Cricket Ireland, Basil McNamee writes: Cricket Ireland is delighted to have been invited to host this years ICC European Under 19 Qualifying Tournament. It is therefore my pleasure, on behalf of Cricket Ireland to extend a very warm welcome to our visitors from Scotland, Netherlands, Denmark, Jersey and Guernsey. I hope their stay, in Northern Ireland, though brief, will be an enjoyable one. Ireland has a very good record in this Tournament, qualifying for six of the seven World Cups at this level. Let us hope that a well-prepared team playing on home soil will make it seven out of eight! Successful international competitions depend on the hard work and commitment of many people and mostly volunteers. On behalf of Cricket Ireland I would like to thank the Northern Cricket Union for taking on the running of this competition. Particularly our thanks to Richard Johnson (Tournament Organiser), our three umpires Louis Fourie, Charlie McElwee and Trevor Magee, three Webmasters John Boomer, John Elder and Michael Taylor, and our Tournament Referee Richard O'Sullivan. This superb local team working with ICC will ensure the success of this tournament. Our thanks also to our sponsors, to the thirteen clubs who have offered their playing facilities and to many other cricket supporters who have contributed to the organisation of this Tournament. We trust the weather will be on its best behaviour and our young cricketers, our stars of tomorrow, will also shine brightly. Best wishes and all good fortune to those involved in the 2010 European U19 Championship. It is the largest urban area in the province of Ulster, and the second largest city on the island of Ireland. The city of Belfast has a population of 267,500. Historically, Belfast has been a centre for the Irish linen industry, tobacco production, rope-making and shipbuilding: the city's main shipbuilders, Harland and Wolff, which built the ill-fated RMS Titanic, propelled Belfast onto the global stage in the early 20th century as the largest and most productive shipyard in the world. The city suffered greatly during the period of disruption, conflict, and destruction called the Troubles, but latterly has undergone a sustained period of calm, free from the intense political violence of former years, and substantial economic and commercial growth. Belfast city centre has undergone considerable expansion and regeneration in recent years, with the newly developed Victoria Square area attracting international attention. Belfast is also a major seaport, with commercial and industrial docks dominating the Belfast Lough shoreline, including the famous Harland and Wolff shipyard. Sports: Belfast has several notable sports teams playing a diverse variety of sports including association football, rugby, Gaelic games, and ice hockey. The Northern Ireland national football team plays its home matches in Windsor Park.
