Principal: Navdeep Aujla Head Teacher: Scott Hodges Secretary: Maureen Mah Trustee: Katrina Chen Dear Parkcrest Families, November has gone by very quickly and the Parkcrest community is busy preparing for the Christmas season. Our Leadership students have put up an Angel Christmas Tree to collect gifts for kids in the community. Please come by and get a card to help make Christmas a joyous occasion for a child in our community. Please read more on the activities of our Leadership Students on page 4 of the newsletter. Thank you to Ms. Marto and Mr. Hodges for all the work they do with the Leadership Students! Our girls and boys volleyball teams wrapped up their regular season and had their recreational and competitive playdays in No- vember. I was very impressed with the level of improvement in the skills of all the students. I want to thank our volunteer coaches who have helped to make this season possible. Cindy Marander and Kim Walters coached the girls teams; Ms. Gourlay was our teacher sponsor. Kevin Clegg, James Chan, Kurt Brock, Juneko Kurahashi and Mike Squance coached the boys team; Ms. Loungsay was the sponsor teacher. Congratulations to the players, coaches and sponsors on a very successful season! Over the last few years, we have been focussing on bringing more technology to Parkcrest Elementary. The PAC has generously supported this effort over the years and we have also been putting school resources towards this. I am very excited to report that we have Brightlinks in our library, LSS room, music room and in 7 of 8 classrooms. Many of our classrooms also have document camer- as. We have some computers and iPads, but are looking to purchase more. Please let me know if you know any sources of funding in the community. Our district technology teacher, Janet Chow, has been working with our teachers to create classroom blogs. Please go to “Classes” in the Parkcrest website and click on the “website” for each classroom teacher. The blogs are at different stages as we are all learning how we went to use the blogs to communicate with parents. I also have a Twitter feed to share school events and activi- ties, please follow me on @parkcrestSD41. We had our annual Scholastic Book Fair at Parkcrest, I want to thank Ms. Hain for spending 4 days at Parkcrest so that we could all have the opportunity to visit the book fair. As enrichment for our students, I am trying to bring outside after-school programs to Parkcrest. In January, we will have one art program and two science programs at the school, please see the “Community News” pages for more information. Ms. Vaesen and parent volunteers are busy preparing for our Christmas Community Event which will take place on December 14th. Please bring all your family and join us to celebrate the Christmas season. For the holiday season, Leadership is sponsoring the “Be an Angel” cam- paign (Burnaby Christmas Bureau). Like last year, the Christmas tree in the school foyer is decorated with cards that indicate the name and age of a child in need of a toy. Toys will be given to children in our community who may not otherwise be receiving gifts. Please come in and pick a card from the tree; alternately you could ask your son or daughter to select a card and bring it home. Please bring your unwrapped toys to the Office - the campaign will run until December 14th. Let’s have another successful toy drive and support our community! Looking ahead to January, we want our community to be aware that Leadership will be running a BATTERY COLLECTION campaign. Did you know that every AA battery contains the same amount of zinc that is needed to save the lives of six children. Zinc deficiency is a global health challenge – 2 billion people worldwide are affected and more than 450,000 children die every year from complications associated with zinc deficiency. We got inspired at WE Day to work together with Teck Re- sources Ltd. who will donate the cash equivalent to the value of zinc con- tained in each battery collected in support of WE’s zinc and health pro- grams in Kenya. The campaign starts in January and will run until the end of May. Please bring your used batteries (any size is OK!!) to Mrs. Mah in the office for collection. 4 5 CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GIRLS AND BOYS VOLLEYBALL TEAMS!
