It is a great privilege and matter of pride for me to welcome you on behalf of the College family on this occasion of Annual Day and Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony of our College. We are indeed honoured to have amongst us Professor P. B. Sharma who graduated in Mechanical Engineering with a Gold Medal (1969) and did his Post Graduation from University of Birmingham (UK) as a Govt. of India National Scholar and also earned the Post Graduate Prize for being the topper. Prof. Sharma with about 37 years of long professional career is a brilliant combination of a great visionary, an outstanding IITian scholar and a world class institution builder who is widely known for his firm commitment and academic excellance. He has been the Principal, Director and Vice-Chancellor of Delhi College of Engineering, Founder Vice- Chancellor of Delhi Technological University and Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya. Prof. Sharma is currently the Vice-Chancellor of Amity University and the President of Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Sir, warm welcome. We are grateful to you. We feel honoured to have amongst us, Prof. Charan Singh, who is holding top positions of Punjab & Sind Bank, National Housing Bank and NABARD Financial Services. With higher education from top international institutions, he is categorized as a well-known academician, top ranking administrator and an outstanding economist. He earned his Doctorate in Economics from the University of New South Wales, Australia and did his Post-Doctorate research from Harvard University and Stanford University, USA. He is also currently a Visiting Professor at Anderson School of Management, University of California, USA. Besides teaching at Indian Institute of Management (Bangalore, where he occupied an RBI Chair), he served Reserve Bank of India in various capacities (1984-2009), International Monetary Fund, Washington DC (USA). He is a widely travelled scholar and his professional articles, books and other publications are well-known and also available on YouTube. Presently posted as Joint Commissioner of Police, Delhi, Shri Kumar is an IPS Officer of 1996 AGMUT Batch and has got an illustrious career. He has served at top positions including ASP and DIG Chandigarh, SP Mizoram, DCP Central District (Delhi), DIG NSG and IG BSF. He has been a recipient of numerous Police Awards, such as Police Medal for Meritorious Services (2013), Police (Special Duty) Medal in NSG (2016), Commendation Card of Director BSF (2017) and Commendation Roll of DG BSF (2018). He is widely known for his hard work, integrity and efficiency and above all a decent human being. Sir, a very warm welcome. We are extremely happy with the presence of another outstanding young Police Officer, Shri Ved Prakash Surya (IPS), presently posted as DCP, Delhi Police. Shri Surya, an IPS Officer of 2009 AGMUT Batch, has served in different capacities in Delhi and also as Superintendent of Police, Arunachal Pradesh. He is a Post- Graduate in Police Management. A well known Sportsperson and a part of Delhi Police Cricket & Badminton teams, he is one of the most active and dynamic officers. The same can be gauged from the fact that he participated in NCC Republic Day Parade during his school days. Sir, we are indeed grateful to you, and extend a warm welcome. Let me now briefly introduce our College. Our College is a constituent College of University of Delhi. As a co-educational institute, it was established by the Government of NCT of Delhi in 1991 to cater to the needs of higher education in a school building of Geeta Colony. In 2001, the College shifted to the present building, the foundation stone of which was laid by the then Hon’ble Vice-President of India (Hon’ble Shri K. R. Narayanan Ji). It is spread over 9 acres including a residential area having 12 staff quarters. With a total student strength of about 3300 (41% girl students), it has got about 136 faculty members including Ad-hocs and Guests, and the supporting staff comprising 79 members in addition to the few outsourced staff (8). The College offers a number of professional and honours courses like Business Economics, Hindi Journalism and Mass Communication, Applied Psychology, Social Work, Commerce, Economics, Hindi, Geography and History in addition to B.A.(Programme), B.Com and Urdu as an elective subject. Three other courses are in the pipeline. The College is privileged to have WUS Health Centre in its premises to look after the healthcare needs of College students and the staff of University of Delhi. Our College also supplements the efforts of the University and serves community by meeting the needs of higher education of the young population. It is one of the Regional-cum-Study Centres to facilitate undergraduate teaching for School of Open Learning (SOL), and for girl students of Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB, University of Delhi). Our College also acts as one of the Centres of Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Ministry of Youth Affairs & 3 Preliminary draft for restricted private use & not to be quoted Sports, Tamil Nadu, that offers a one year Post Graduate Diploma in Youth Development (PGDYD). Thanks to Dr. Arvind Kumar, Dr. D.K. Pandeya and Dr. Ravindra Singh who have been coordinating these programmes. The College continues to be one of the 20 Earthquake Strong Ground Motion Stations in Delhi for recording and monitoring earthquakes in Delhi under the project jointly handled by Director of Seismology Division (DST)-DU-IIT (Roorkee). The College constantly strives to improve its Good Practices, for which ‘Special Commendation Prize’ was awarded by University of Delhi in 2015. The College has registered well in time and much ahead of others with GeM for general purchases and PFMS for government grants. It celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2015-16, and it is now NAAC accredited with B+ grade. Let us quickly review the College activities. During the last year, the College took many academic, administrative and infrastructural initiatives in order to improve the teaching and learning outcomes. This year, the College has added 2nd Floor to the teaching block besides creating Print Media, Radio Recording and Work Station Labs. The College has also been awarded Political Science (H) and Punjabi as an elective subject. The College starts its regular academic life while organising an Open Day Session followed by an Orientation Programme. It was organised on 19th July 2019 to welcome the newly admitted young students. Ms. Gagandeep Kaur (renowned child and clinical psychologist), Mr. S.K. Sharma (advocate and management consultant) and Mr. Girish Nishana (Senior Correspondent, DD News) graced the occasion and enlightened the young students about the role of the college education in their life and what they can achieve by pursuing studies with hard work and dedication. Thanks to Dr. Sarla Bhardwaj and Dr. M.S. Vats. Our College is in the name of Bharat Ratna Baba Saheb, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar. He was a multi-faceted personality, a great legal luminary, known as Father of the Indian Constitution, a social scientist par excellence, a prolific writer and an editor, a great social reformer and a brilliant orator. In order to acknowledge and create awareness among students and society about his life and mission, academic work and his contribution towards improving the lot of socially disadvantaged sections of population and building a new India based on the principles of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity, the College started Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar Memorial Lecture Series in 2007 (the year, I joined) on the occasion of his birth anniversary. Since then, it has been continuing. The inaugural Baba Saheb Memorial lecture was delivered by Prof. Namvar Singh on 14th April 2007. The last lecture was delivered on 13th April 2019 by one of the leading economist, Prof. Surender Kumar from Delhi School of Economics. It was further supplemented by Shri Kuldeep Pakad (DM/DC, Shahdara, Delhi).
