Practice Work – Nomenclature Last Name Assignment Number First Name Due Date n/a Review – Chemical Nomenclature Review Note: This assignment is not due. It is for your own personal practice. An answer key is included on the end of this practice packet. I highly, highly, highly, highly, highly suggest that – before you begin this practice work – you go through your notebook and write all the naming rules for covalent compounds, ionic compounds, and acids on one sheet of paper. Chapter 2.8 – Naming Simple Compounds Appendix 10 (website): Latin Roots for Selected Transition Metals Appendix 11d (website): Naming Acids (available on the website) Part A: Identifying Substances Identify each substance as an ionic compound (I), covalent compound (C), or an acid (A) by writing I, C, or A – respectively – in the blank provided. After you identify the compounds as ionic, covalent, or acids, name them. Note: Originally, students were not supposed to name the compounds in Part 1. That’s why there is not a lot of space for the answers. If you are not sure whether a compound is covalent or ionic, use the Electronegativity Values Table to determine the electronegativity difference between the two atoms. If the difference is 0.4 or below, the substance is covalent If the difference between 0.4 and 1.7, the substance is polar covalent Ionic is always metal + nonmetal OR a substance that contains a polyatomic ion. Sample Problem: Ex) Li3N(s) I 1) Cl2O7(l) 8) SiF4(g) 2) H3PO4(aq) 9) KI(s) 3) H2Se(g) 10) N2O5(s) 4) Pb(NO3)2(s) 11) H2CrO4(aq) 5) P4O10(s) 12) SCl2(s) 6) NaHCO3(s) 13) H2O(l) 7) HI(g) 14) HNO3(aq) Page 1 of 4 Practice Work – Nomenclature Part B: Naming Chemical Compounds Identify each substance by circling I, C, or A. Then, write the name of the substance in the space provided. 15) CaCl2(s) I C A 16) PCl5(s) I C A 17) HBr(aq) I C A 18) Cu2SO4(s) I C A 19) FeO(s) I C A 20) XeF4(s) I C A 21) NF3(g) I C A 22) H2CO3(aq) I C A 23) HCl(g) I C A Note: Careful with this one; notice that this compound isn’t aqueous. 24) NH4Cl(s) I C A 25) Al(NO3)3(s) I C A Page 2 of 4 Practice Work – Nomenclature Part C: Writing Chemical Formulas Identify each substance by circling I, C, or A. Then, write chemical formula in the space provided. Make sure that the answer includes the state: (s), (l), (g), or (aq). 26) tetraphosphorus heptasulfide(s) I C A 27) water(l) I C A 28) barium sulfide(s) I C A 29) chloric acid(aq) I C A 30) magnesium hydroxide(s) I C A 31) ammonia(l) I C A 32) cobalt(VI) chloride(s) I C A 33) dry ice(s) I C A 34) diiodine pentoxide(s) I C A 35) lead(II) nitrate(s) I C A 36) chlorous acid(aq) I C A 37) tin(IV) chloride(s) I C A 38) nitrogen trichloride(l) I C A 39) vanadium(III) sulfide(s) I C A 40) hydrocyanic acid(aq) I C A 41) chlorine monofluoride(g) I C A 42) steam I C A Page 3 of 4 Practice Work – Nomenclature Answers 1) C dichlorine heptoxide(l) 22) A carbonic acid(aq) 2) A phosphoric acid(aq) 23) C hydrogen chloride(g) 3) C hydrogen selenide(g) 24) I ammonium chloride(s) 4) I lead(II) nitrate(s) 25) I aluminum nitrate(s) 5) C tetraphosphorus decoxide(s) 26) C P4S7(s) 6)* I sodium hydrogen carbonate(s) 27) C H2O(l) 7) C silicon tetrafluoride(s) 28) I BaS(s) 8) C hydrogen iodide(g) 29) A HClO3(aq) 9) I potassium iodide(s) 30) I Mg(OH)2(s) 10) C dinitrogen pentoxide(s) 31) C NH3(l) 11) A chromic acid(aq) 32) I CoCl6(s) 12) C sulfur dichloride(s) 33)** C CO2(s) 13) C water(l) 34) C I2O5(s) 14) A nitric acid(aq) 35) I Pb(NO3)2(s) 15) I calcium chloride(s) 36) A HClO2(aq) 16) C phosphorus pentachloride(s) 37) I SnCl4(s) 17) A hydrobromic acid(aq) 38) C NF3(l) 18) I copper(I) sulfate(s) 39) I V2S5(s) 19) I iron(II) oxide(s) 40) A HCN(aq) 20) C xenon tetrafluoride(s) 41) C ClF(g) 21) C nitrogen trifluoride(g) 42) C H2O(g) * This could also be named sodium bicarbonate ** Yeah, this was a “cheap shot.” But...this isn’t a graded homework assignment, and I’d rather you see it here, than it be a surprise in CHEM 120 or CHEM 121.
