The university reserves the right to withdraw or add names. 2 Johns Hopkins University, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences ZANVYL KRIEGER SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES Ceremony Speaker Biographies VERONICA DONAHUE Associate Dean for Graduate and Professional Programs Advanced Academic Programs Veronica Donahue, PhD, a noted leader in continuing education programs, was named associate dean of Johns Hopkins’ Advanced Academic Programs in September 2018. Dr. Donahue came to Johns Hopkins from Georgetown University, where she worked in multiple positions at the School of Continuing Studies since 2006. Most recently, she was responsible for setting the strategic direction of the Academic and Faculty Affairs Division, which oversees faculty serving adult learners in the applied learning environment, which includes online, hybrid, and on-ground delivery formats. She was also responsible for faculty development programs and workshops. During her earlier years at Georgetown University, Dr. Donahue served as associate dean of summer school and special programs; associate dean of professional and executive education at the university’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar; and associate dean of the applied management graduate programs. Before Georgetown, Dr. Donahue worked at American University as associate dean of The Washington Semester Program and as assistant professor and chair of the American Government Department. Dr. Donahue is best known for developing innovative programming, exceeding revenue goals, and successfully leading diverse and complex program portfolios. She has a broad range of expertise in implementing and managing higher education divisions, developing and setting academic strategy, designing curriculum and assessment strategies, and setting standards for strong learning outcomes and higher satisfaction among faculty and students. Dr. Donahue received her bachelor’s degree in political science from Syracuse University. She holds a master’s degree in media studies from The New School in New York and a master’s degree in political science from Johns Hopkins. She also received her doctoral degree in political science from Johns Hopkins University. CHRISTOPHER S. CELENZA James B. Knapp Dean Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences Professor Christopher S. Celenza is the James B. Knapp Dean of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. He is also a professor of history and classics. Dr. Celenza was previously dean of Georgetown College at Georgetown University, and a professor of history and classics. During his time at Georgetown he advanced many efforts 2021 Graduate Ceremony 3 to foster inclusion and equity, and developed a new undergraduate research program that improved opportunities for both students and assistant and associate professors. Previous to his 2017 move to Georgetown, Dr. Celenza was vice provost for faculty affairs at Johns Hopkins, and held the Charles Homer Haskins Professorship in classics. He first joined the Krieger School faculty in 2005 as a professor in what was then the Department of German and Romance Languages. He also taught for nine years at Michigan State, and holds two doctoral degrees—a doctorate in history (Duke University, 1995) and a doctorate in classics and neo-latin literature (University of Hamburg, 2001). Dr. Celenza has received numerous awards and grants, including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Fulbright Foundation, and the American Council of Learned Societies. He served as the 21st director of the American Academy in Rome from 2010 to 2014, and as the director of JHU’s Singleton Center for the Study of Premodern Europe from 2008 to 2010. He is the author or editor of 11 books and more than 40 scholarly articles in the fields of Italian Renaissance history, post-classical Latin literature and philosophy, and the history of classical scholarship. An Italian translation of his book The Lost Italian Renaissance was published in 2014. His most recent books include Petrarch: Everywhere a Wanderer (London: Reaktion, 2017) and The Intellectual World of the Italian Renaissance (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2018). His latest book, The Italian Renaissance and the Origins of the Modern Humanities: An Intellectual History, 1400-1800 is forthcoming from Cambridge University Press. SUNIL KUMAR Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Johns Hopkins University Provost Kumar took office as the 15th provost of Johns Hopkins University on September 1, 2016. He is the chief academic officer and second-ranking member of the senior administration, responsible for promoting and coordinating the university’s teaching and research mission. He oversees the university’s nine schools, as well as several interdisciplinary programs and academic centers. Provost Kumar previously served as dean of the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, as well as the George Pratt Shultz Professor of Operations Management. During his tenure at Chicago, Dr. Kumar concentrated on broadening and strengthening the intellectual footprint of the business school, including expanding the faculty, supporting increasingly diverse student aspirations, and expanding the reach of the school’s programs. He also focused on forging stronger relationships with alumni and disseminating the school’s intellectual capital more effectively. Before joining the Booth School of Business, Dr. Kumar spent 14 years on the faculty of the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, where he was the Fred H. Merrill 4 Johns Hopkins University, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences Professor of Operations, Information and Technology. He also served as senior associate dean for academic affairs, overseeing the school’s MBA program and leading faculty groups in marketing and organizational behavior. Born in India, Dr. Kumar received a Master of Engineering degree in computer science and automation from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Mangalore University in Surathkal. He earned a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. BAHIJA JALLAL Chief Executive Officer and Director of the Board Immunocore Dr. Jallal is the chief executive officer and director of the board of Immunocore, the leading T-cell receptor biotechnology company. Prior to joining Immunocore in January 2019, she was president of MedImmune, AstraZeneca’s global biologics research and development unit. She was also executive vice president of AstraZeneca and a member of its senior executive team. Author of more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and holding more than 15 patents, Dr. Jallal is also a council member of the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and a member of the American Association of Science. She is also the immediate past president of the Association of Women in Science. Dr. Jallal was named the 2017 Woman of the Year by the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association. Prior to joining MedImmune, Dr. Jallal worked with Chiron Corporation where she served as vice president, drug assessment and development, and successfully established the company’s translational medicine group. Prior to Chiron Corporation, she worked at Sugen Inc. Earning her doctorate in physiology from the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, Dr. Jallal then conducted her postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany.
