After helping his sister choose a doll, I asked the children if they would like a photo with the officers. The younger sister grabbed her mother’s leg and hid behind her. The mother then stated; “She’s afraid of the police.” I then explained that these officers were here to protect her and they helped us find these special toys just for kids in our neighborhood. A beautiful moment unfolded when the big brother’s expression completely transformed from fear to joy as he walked towards the police and said; “I’ll be with you in a picture.” Our team at bKind believes that we can build bridges between the NYPD and NYCHA communities by having open communication, giving residents a voice, and reassuring them that their lives matter to us.
