not talk about growth enough, and when they do, they speak with unearned conviction. Too often, people overlook economic growth when thinking about how to tackle the world’s most pressing problems, such as poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment. At the same time, their understanding of the mechanics of growth is less defi ni- tive than commonly thought—even though advice is often given to develop- ing countries with great confi dence. Consequently, the Commission’s mandate is to “take stock of the state of theoretical and empirical knowl- edge on economic growth with a view to drawing implications for policy for the current and next generation of policy makers.” To help assess the state of knowledge, the Commission invited lead- ing academics and policy makers from around the world to a series of 12 workshops held from 2007 to 2009 in Washington, DC; New York City, NY; New Haven, CT; and Cambridge, MA.
