Aserbiaii Circle Fo!K-Dance Issued on the FOLKDAN:ER Label Record FOLKD~ER MH1003 Directed by Michael Herman

This dance is part of a series NEBESKO KOLO of folk and square dance records AserbIaii Circle Fo!k-Dance issued on THE FOLK DAN:ER label Record FOLK D~ER MH 1003 directed by Michael Herman The "Kolo" is the typical dance of Yugoslavia, especially Serbia. The word "kolo" means circle and there are thousands of Colos. Most of them include the same basic steps. This is one of the easier ko1os. Translation of the title is "heavenly , c irc1e" • FCRMA.TION: No partners~ needed. Any number of dancers in a circle, hands joined 1 pw. The circle usually has a leader at one end that weaves it at will around the room. PART 1: With hands joined, all move to own right with four "two-steps". A two-step is done like, this: Step forward on Right foot. Bring left foot up to it. Step forward on Right again. Now step forward on Left foot, Bring Right foot up to it, step forward on Left foot again, etc. In moving to Right start on Right foot. Now repeat the four "two-steps" to the Left, starting on Right foot. PART 2: All face center, keep hands joined. Step forward on Right foot. Step in place on Left foot. Step back on Right foot. step in place on Left foot. Step forward on Right foot. Step in place on Left foot. Step forward on Right foot. Step in place on Left foot. (note that the Right foot will now be free, PARr 3: Do four pas de basques in place, to Right, Left, Right, Left. In Serbian dances the pas de basques are even in rhythm and are more like running steps. In teaching the aance we like to say this: Le8p to Right on count 1, then take 2 quick steps running in place, L,R. Leap to Left on count 1, then take 2 quick running steps in place, R,L. Repeat to Right and Left. When dancers are familiar with this form of the step, then you may teach them to do it correctly like this: Leap to Right on Right foot.. Cross Left over Right momentar ily, then step on Right foot. Leap to Left. cross Right over Left. Step on Left At the end of the four "pas de basques" all stamp once on Right foot. Repeat dance from beginning. Many shouts accOIDparw Kolos, therefore dancers should be encouraged to shout at will "Hey", or "Hupll or "Hi, Hill or "Veselo" or T1Hoopatsup", etc. - 13 - Let's Dance and Sing, A Collection of Folk Dances and Songs, circa 1965.
