Optical Engineering 0803 1. Objectives Optical engineering is a cross discipline of optics and modern science and technology. It is a national key discipline. The major research areas include: advanced laser manufacturing, new laser and optoelectronics technologies, micro/nano optics, optical information processing, optical communication technology, photoelectric sensor and detection and biophotonics etc. Training objectives for doctoral degree are: to enable students to firmly master the fundamental theory, the systematic and in-depth expertise as well as related experimental methodology and technology in the discipline; to enable students to have the ability to undertake independent research work in the discipline; and to cultivate high-quality top-notch creative talents with innovative spirit and practical ability. The research topics will be closely linked to the current needs of economic and social development in Beijing as well as in China. The ultimate goal is to output senior specialized personnel engaged in scientific research, high-tech development and high level education in the areas of optical engineering, advanced manufacturing, information technology etc. 2. The master level courses should be finished in the first academic year in accordance with the subject of the Educational Plan for Master Degree Program, and the credits should be at least 25 (excluding the credits of academic exchanging activities during the Master study period). The students who are qualified for direct doctoral students I or II do not need to conduct Master level academic activities and Doctoral level first foreign language study. They proceed to do other courses in the third semester in accordance with the subject of Educational Plan for Doctoral Degree Program, and the required credits are at least 37. 5. Arrangements of Doctoral Dissertation (1)Research proposal report for doctoral degree will be performed in the third semester (for direct doctoral student I and II, this will be performed in the 4th semester). Time committed to scientific research and dissertation writing should not be less than three years. Application for oral dissertation defense will be considered after at least two years completion of the research proposal report. (2)Mid-term assessment will be conducted after one year completion of the dissertation proposal. For those who failed to pass the mid-term assessment, under the approval by the college and graduate school, dissertation can be terminated. (3)The doctoral dissertation must be completed independently by graduate students under the supervision of the instructor. The doctoral dissertation should reflect the ability of the doctoral student to master the fundamental theory as well as systematic and in-depth expertise in the area, to work independently and to achieve innovative results. (4)Doctoral students should actively participate in international academic activities, write and publish academic papers, and apply for patents. Doctoral students' research outcomes obtained during the study period should meet the basic requirements for graduation and the degree. Postgraduates Dissertation Mid-term Dissertation Dissertation defence Classfication Proposal Assessment pre-defence Third semester Fifth semester 6 months before defence At least 2 years after Doctoral students proposal Direct Doctoral Fourth semester Sixth semester 6 months before defence
