Henderson. We have been eyeing this play – which debuted in 2012 in London to sold-out houses – for a while and are delighted to present it in our first season as a resident company here at The Greenhouse Theater Center. It continues our examination of stories that focus on characters in search of human connections. I am drawn to plays that demand an intimate experience between audience and text, which explains why we adore this play and this playwright. THE RIVER’s sleek and strange story, the poetry of its language, the nonlinear path it follows and the way the playwright manipulates us delivers just such an experience. It is a play that demands an intimate space like ours. And it is a perfect vehicle for BoHo by embodying an insidious threat to our core principles of truth, beauty, freedom and love. The play centers on an avid trout fisherman who is on his annual fishing holiday to his secluded cabin in the woods, and on the two women who accompany him. Likened to a lyrical and subtly crafted piece of chamber music, it teases and haunts us as it explores the nature and honesty of relationships via a mystery as glinting and elusive as a fish. THE RIVER is beguilingly simple, yet as deep running and treacherous as any real river. The nature of love – trying to catch it and reel it in – is pivotal to the story. I promise it will reel you in and leave an indelible impression. As always, I look forward to seeing you at the theater.
