On behalf of the over 400 students who will benefit from your support tonight, we welcome you to Vanderbilt Hall for a most memorable evening. Last year's auction raised more than $100,000 to provide grants to NYU law students volunteering in public interest positions throughout the United States and around the world. We hope to do even better this year thanks to your generous support. NYU's commitment to support every student who pursues the public good doesnʼt just create amazing opportunities for students. It also makes a vital contribution to our local and global communities. Each summer NYU students work in fascinating and important fields—from children's advocacy to environmental protection to providing services to low-income families. You'll notice stories and pictures from past PILC grant recipients displayed in Greenberg Lounge during the silent auction. Last year's Auction sent our students to work with organizations worldwide, including the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, the Hague Conference on Private International Law, and the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights in Haiti; of course, many students helped our local communities, whether interning at the NYC Fire Department, the Bronx Defenders, or the US Attorneyʼs Office. The funding raised tonight will help not only 1Ls exploring a new field or region, but also 2Ls dedicated to serving their communities. Tonight's event relies on the generosity of businesses, law firms, and alumni, the hard work of student committee members and volunteers, and the dedication and support of the entire law school community. The auction simply could not happen without the support of so many, and we are truly grateful to everyone who made a contribution, whether large or small. Thank you all. Additionally, the Public Service Auction is not just an opportunity to support a worthy cause, it is also a chance for the entire law school community—students, faculty, staff, alumni, family and friends—to share the evening and enjoy the time together. At NYU, we are a "private university in the public service,” and we will celebrate it. 2 Stop by the champagne tower and grab a glass and gift certificate from one of 19 local restaurants. Peruse the alumni, student and faculty donations that make our auction unique and fresh every year. Join in the excitement of the live auction and the third edition of the Annual Dean Ricky McEnroe Wii Tennis Championships. The Deanʼs been training this year— watch out! Most of all, enjoy the evening! Thank you so much for coming. Happy Bidding! You must have a bidder number for your bid to be considered valid. Bidder numbers may be obtained at the registration table in Room 110 (beneath the grand staircase in the Vanderbilt Hall entrance). You will be asked to fill out a form and will be given a card indicating your bidder number, which will also be used to place bids during the Live Auction. If you would like to guarantee that you win an item, please use the Guaranteed Buy-Out Option. At the bottom of each bid sheet is a line labeled “guaranteed buy-out.” The guaranteed buy-out price will be more than the value of the item, but if you choose to use this option, you are guaranteed to win whatever special something you’ve got your eye on. (This also means that if the guaranteed buy-out line is already filled out, the bidding on that item is closed.) And remember, every penny you spend goes to support NYU students doing important work through their public interest summer internships! When the announcement is made at 10:00 PM that the Silent Auction has closed, the highest bid at that time will be the winning bid. Winners will be notified by email. Live Auction If you wish to place a bid, please raise your card so that the auctioneer can read your bidder number. Please keep your card up until the auctioneer recognizes you. If you are the highest bidder for an item, an Auction representative will approach you to confirm your bid. If you prefer to pay for Live Auction items by cash or check, please be prepared to do so at that time. 8 Redemption of Won Items Any items that can be mailed, such as gift certificates and non-time-sensitive tickets, will be mailed to the address that guests of the Auction included on their registration forms. All other items may be picked up during office hours from the NYU PILC office on the 4th floor of Furman Hall, 245 Sullivan St., New York, NY 10012. A list of office hours will be available at registration in Room 110. Please note: All Auction gift certificates expire on March 1, 2012 unless otherwise noted. All items or certificates not picked up from an Auction representative by April 1, 2011 will be considered forfeited. Individuals will still be charged for forfeited items.
