THE ADRIAN EMPIRE FAQ 6 IS IT A CROWN, A CORONET, OR A CIRCLET? WHAT IS A CIRCLET? A circlet is a circle of metal, no more than about a half inch or so wide. It is worn on the head, across the forehead. A circlet has smooth edges, with no decorations sticking up from the edge. These are called "points". A circlet may be plain or fancy, or even jewelled, and may be made of any metal the wearer wishes. WHAT IS A CORONET OR CROWN? The same as a circlet, only it has points on it. These points can be fleurs-de- lis, crosses, or anything else. Just like circlets, a coronet or crown may be very fancy and jewelled, or very plain. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENT BETWEEN A CORONET AND A CROWN? The difference is in the person wearing it. Stylistically, there is no difference between the two. There's no way to tell if something is a crown or a coronet just by looking at it. WHO CAN WEAR A CIRCLET? Anyone with the title of Lord or Lady may wear a circlet. Viceroys may also choose to wear a circlet. Some people who are entitled to wear coronets and crowns may prefer to wear a circlet instead. WHO CAN WEAR A CORONET? Anyone who has the title of Baron, Viscount, Count, and Prince (and their female counterparts) may wear a coronet. WHO CAN WEAR A CROWN? The word "crown" means that the person wearing it is a Sovereign. Sovereigns are Dukes, Duchesses, Kings, Queens, and the Emperor and Empress. WHAT RANK IS WHAT? Imperial Estates Writ #18 has much more information on this, but you can always just talk to a person wearing a circlet, coronet, or crown and ask them. WHY DON'T WE HAVE DIFFERENT CROWNS AND CORONETS FOR DIFFERENT RANKS? Here in Adria, we have decided to follow a more historical practice and allow people to design their own according to their rank and means, within the general guidelines. Historically, if you were of high rank, you were therefore rich and could afford a fancier coronet than someone of lower rank.
