Up at 8.0am. Walk round Campden Hill. After got to work at 10.0 & finished by 1.30 drawing of Emperor (German) as Crummles. Lunch. Dressed & off by 3.0 to the Private View of the Millais Exhibition. Saw many friends. Aitchison, Mr Aird, Rivière etc etc. Rooms very hot. Frith looking a withered old man. Out & M & self walked nearly home. Put M in bus & she thought had dropped muff. Got mud up trowsers. Home just in time to dress for dinner & off in carriage at 7.30 for 1st night of Peter the Great at the Lyceum. Again many friends. Poor play well received. Dull & heavy. Round at back. Saw Inderwick, Mrs Harold Roller, Dickens, Helen Hardman & many others. Introduced Cartwright to M. Arthur à B at supper as usual. Home by carriage in wet at 1.15pm. Bed at 2.0am. Had sent Otley to Stores in the morning. (Red ink: Went to Millais Exhibition & to 1st night of 'Peter the Great'.) Sunday January 2 Stafford Terrace. Up at 9.0. Very bad head ache. Breakfast. After sat in chair & sorted Times etc. Took M for a walk up the Row. Sent her home by bus. Saw very distinguished lady at top of Row. Also Mr & Mrs Wheeler, Miss Crozier that was. On by bus to the Garrick Club. Lunched with Beetle & young Sullivan (son of Sir Fred Sullivan). Talk of Messel to him after. Sleepy upstairs. After to Athenaeum. Wrote letters & left 7.0 for home by bus. Fanny Barker, Alice Linley & Miss Rose Innes dined. Pleasant dinner. They left 11.0 & 11.45 respectively. Bed 12.0. Tired. Slept well. Saw very long funeral, Mr Lyons Refreshment Contractor. (Red ink: Ought to have Xd Channel. Fanny Barker & Alice & Miss Rose Innes dined with us quietly.) Monday January 3 Stafford Terrace. Up at 8.30. Fog. Walked round Campden Hill. Breakfast. After mended a lot of things with glue etc. Looked over letters etc. Lunch. At 2.15 M & self went & looked over No 19 Phillimore Gardens where the Archers used to live. After had hair cut & called on Chesterton. Had talk. Home & tidied up things etc. M & self dined together quietly had bottle Zeltsinger. Read after dinner & bed early. Tuesday January 4 Stafford Terrace. Birthday. Letter from Roy. Short. Up at 8.30 & got ready for Calais. Left at 10.25, cab from Met. High St. Down with 2 severe men. On board met Sir Alex'r & Lady Mackenzie, Cartwright wife & daughter & also Percival who I talked to took for McIlvaine. Only thought of it afterwards. Good passage. Not so good a lunch. After back. Met Mr Hutton. Carriage by self home. Left book in the train. S.T at 8.0. Otley met me with the carriage. Quiet dinner with M. Had bottle of 1885 Champagne, Ayala. Very good. Bed at 11.15 early. (Red ink: Birthday. Xd Channel to Calais. Met Sir Alex Mackenzie & Cartwright.) Wednesday January 5 Stafford Terrace. Up at 8.30am. M in bed. Walk round C.H. After in morning put bath room drawers right & after lunch developed 14 2 Jessop plates. M out in carriage. Dressed & on by bus to call on Fk Barr. Met Mrs Armstrong in 3 LINLEY SAMBOURNE'S DIARY 1898 the omnibus. Long talk with Mr B altogether same as we were. On in wet to Garrick. Gave Cole Xmas box. Saw Bancroft & Bendall. After to P.D. F.C.B, J.T, A à B, self, O.S, P.M, E.T.R, H.W.L. Very long discussion. No cut for self. Getting tired & weary of playing 2nd fiddle all these years & wish I could get out of it. Left at 11.0 with J.T & home by cab & bus. Lennie M had dined with M, & poured his woes in ear of M. Bed at 12.15am. Pouring wet all day. Thursday January 6 Stafford Terrace. Up at 8.30 & out round Campden Hill. After having no subject wrote one & sent drawing to Sidney Jennings etc. Printed back photos etc. M in bed. Warm morning. Thermometer 63° with window wide open. Tip came round. Printed phos. At 1.15 subject of German Emperor making up as Chinese came. Left after lunch with M at 3.0 in carriage & went up from Hyde Park Corner by bus to St Martin's Lane. Called on Evereds & after bought 2 bronzes a Mercury & a Fortuna for £7 in Long Acre. Called Garrick for tea. Wrote 6 or 7 letters. Home by bus. Called & selected Eagle Helmet. Dined 8.0, M & self. Bed after reading at 11.30pm. Lennie Messel had influenza & went home ill. (Cutting glued in: The wife of G.Llewellyn Davies, of a son.) Friday January 7 Stafford Terrace. Lovely day up at 8.30. Walk round Campden Hill & after schemed subject of German Emperor as Chinese. Photod Otley at 11.30. Enlarged & got all ready by lunch time. After rest. M out. Work at 3.15 to 8.30pm. Eclipse of the moon. Dined & read till 11.0. Snooze & bed 12.15. M woke up feeling seedy & had to leave bed. Had eaten sardines. Slept at last 2.0am. Most lovely day, 65° with window open & small fire. (Cuttings glued in: Death of Ernest Hart. Marriage of John Scrimgeour to Jessie Greig. Marriage of Frank Eland to Dora Scrimgeour.) Saturday January 8 Stafford Terrace. Up at 8.20. M had been very ill in the night. Down & after breakfast go to work to finish German Emperor as Chinese. Began 9.45 up to 1.30. M in bed. After lunch at 2.20 went in carriage to Duke of York's Theatre & saw with M & Midge 'A Happy Life'. Very well played. Miss Dorothea Baird pretty. Put M & Midge in carriage & went to the Garrick & wrote letters & had tea. Talk to Chitty & Hare. Out called C.C got letter from L.G.
