The highlight of this auction is undoubtedly the fabulous Phar Lap & Horse Racing collection assembled by Dario Dicarla of Melbourne featuring not only a pair Phar Lap’s horse-shoes Torsten Weller and his bridle as well as a selection of Race Books (notably including the very rare Cox Plate [email protected] 1930 & 1931 & Melbourne Cup 1929, 1930 & 1931 books), but also a range of other fascinating material, well-complemented by selected items from other vendors. This is preceded by a strong section of Cricket material featuring the extensive collection of Don Bradman memorabilia formed by Don Moyes. Other notable items include the first Sheffield Shield gold winner’s medal from 1892 won by Jack Worrall (who not only captained Victoria in cricket, but was also the very first Australian Rules football coach), as well as the earliest known Tasmanian cricket cap. The Olympics offering is extensive, highlighted by a 1928 Australian Olympic Team ‘Baggy Green’ cap, and with a substantial 1956 Melbourne Games section. Under ‘Australiana’ you will find a wonderful Sydney Harbour Bridge collection with items ranging from kitsch to historic being offered substantially intact, and from a little further afield comes a volume of 1870s Fiji Times newspapers. This is followed by ‘Pop Culture’ featuring Disney’s Mickey Mouse plus Movie & Music Memorabilia highlighted by two Pink Nick Anning Floyd gold record awards. Among the former there are multiple Australian pre- decimal copper and silver lots; from the latter a Three Pence 1922/21 Overdate and not one but three Pre-Federation 1890 £1 Sydney Deposit Bank banknotes which have not previously been on the market. The Worldwide section includes a lovely selection of Russian 18th to 20th century copper and silver coins rarely offered here, as well as a Great Britain £5 ‘Operation Bernhard’ WWII German forgery, and from New Zealand a wonderful 1918 Bradbury Wilkinson £10 printer’s Max Williamson proof, pre-decimal notes up to the scarce £50 ‘T P Hanna’ circulation note, plus a group of [email protected] decimal Star Notes.
