SAINT BONAVENTURE CATHOLIC PARISH May 22, 2016 The Most Holy Trinity The Most Holy Trinity May 22, 2016 PASTOR'S CORNER Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This Thursday, May 26, marks the one year anniversary of my mother’s death. As I refl ect on her life, I can’t help but think about her deep faith in God. In every crisis she turned to prayer. She looked to the Crucifi x and joined her hands as she called out to our Lord. This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity in honor of the Most Holy Trinity. My mother may not have been a theologian but I think she was as close to the Holy Trinity as any of the doctors of the church like St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Theresa of Avila, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Hildegard of Bingen, and St. Bonaventure, patron of our parish. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them. It is the most fundamental and essential teaching in the “hierarchy of the truths of faith.” The whole history of salvation is identical with the history of the way and the means by which the one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, reveals himself to men “and reconciles and unites with himself those who turn away from sin.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #234) As the Catechism states, the Trinity is a mystery, yet motherly love can help us come to know God as Trinity: “God's parental tenderness can also be expressed by the image of motherhood, which emphasizes God's immanence, the intimacy between Creator and creature.” (CCC #239) Yet the love of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is deeper than any human love. We call out to God to deepen our love for the Holy Trinity. We call out to the Holy Trinity to deepen our love for family, friends, and even for those who do not love us. The Sign of the Cross is a beautiful expression of this. As we move our hand from head to midsection, then from shoulder to shoulder, and pray: “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” we embrace God and God embraces us. Let me conclude with this prayer offered by Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity: O my God, Trinity whom I adore, help me forget myself entirely so to establish myself in you, unmovable and peaceful as if my soul were already in eternity. May nothing be able to trouble my peace or make me leave you, O my unchanging God, but may each minute bring me more deeply into your mystery! Grant my soul peace. Make it your heaven, your beloved dwelling and the place of your rest. May I never abandon you there, but may I be there, whole and entire, completely vigilant in my faith, entirely adoring, and wholly given over to your creative action.
